In his work Chekhov combined the dispassionate attitude of a scientist and doctor with the sensitivity and psychological understanding of an artist. Anton Chekhov in Czarist Russia As much as it is acknowledged that Anton Chekhov was indeed a key component in world literature, a victim of tuberculosis, and a believer in liberty, the bearded figure in a black hat who was at once an M.D., a master of the short story and a seminal figure in modern theater was also seen to be a creature of his time in czarist Russia. "In his mind, no Jew could ever fully enter into Russian life, and no woman ever equal a male genius." As Chekhov grew famous he became increasingly obsessed with privacy and "autobiographophobia," deflecting interviewers and keeping his papers from sight. His stories often concern trivial people, that tend to speak with a catch in their throats, like the title character in "The Darling," a shallow bourgeois who changes her interests with each succeeding lover. As Tolstoy observed, when Chekhov began writing this tale, "he, like Balaam, intended to curse. But the god of poetry forbade him, and commanded him to bless." In two generations, the Chekhovs worked themselves up from serfdom to the middle class. Anton's father, a merchant, was physically brutal but intellectually ambitious who made certain his son received the best education rubles could buy. Twin forces shaped Anton's life and art: early on he felt a call to practice medicine; and he was drawn to literature particularly to an essay by Turgenev, "Don Quixote and Hamlet." This indulgence of the antihero was to shape Chekhov's protagonists: agitators who do not think, and intellectuals who dare not act.

Chekhov combined a naturalistic method with a philosophic mind and a humanitarian gentleness of temper. At least four of his plays The Sea Gull The Cherry Orchard , Uncle Vanya, and The Three Sisters have become widely known throughout the world, particularly through the interpretation of the Moscow Art Theater players. The Cherry Orchard Synge alone have been able to achieve the classic tragic note. Their scenes rise out of human experiences, wherein love and tenderness and family relationships have had their due meed. Especially with Chekhov does one feel the presence of an understanding heart; nothing escapes his observation, yet all is rendered with sympathy and pity. Anton Chekhov Anton Chekhov, 1898 Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was born on 29 January, 1860, in Taganrog, a provincial town in southern Russia. He was the son of a grocer and the grandson of a serf who had bought his freedom and the freedom of his family. His modest background and upbringing were crucial to his development as a writer. Anton was the third son of six children, five of whom were boys. His father was a severe and profoundly religious man. His mother, on the other hand, was a kind and tender woman. In later years Chekhov used to say: "Our talents we got from our father, but our soul from our mother.” After he graduated from high school, in 1879, Chekhov went to Moscow to study medicine. While attending medical school, he began to publish short stories in magazines. Until 1883, Chekhov wrote only under pseudonyms ( Antosha Chekhonte, A Man without a Spleen , etc). In 1884, he graduated from the university and began to practice medicine. Motley Tales , was published in 1886, and brought him real success. Between 1888 and his death he single-handedly revolutionized both the drama and the short story. Near the end of his life he married an actress, Olga Knipper. He died from tuberculosis in 1904, age 44. About this project: Constance Garnett translated and published 13 volumes of Chekhov stories in the years 1916-1922. Unfortunately, the order of the stories is almost random, and in the last volume Mrs. Garnett stated: "I regret that it is impossible to obtain the necessary information for a chronological list of all Tchehov's works." This site presents all 201 stories in the order of their publication in Russia. About the notes: I have added notes to explain both the cultural practices of 19th century Russia and the occasional Britishisms that Mrs. Garnett used in her translations. Passages marked in blue have an explantory note at the end of the story. I am particularly indebted to Edgar H. After helping, both as doctor and as medical administrator, to relieve the disastrous famine of 1891-92, Chekhov bought a country estate in the village of Melikhovo, about 50 miles (80 km) south of Moscow. This was his main residence for about six years, providing a home for his aging parents, as also for his sister Mariya, who acted as his housekeeper and remained unmarried in order to look after her brother. The Melikhovo period was the most creatively effective of Chekhov's life so far as short stories were concerned, for it was during these six years that he wrote "The Butterfly," "Neighbours" (1892), "An Anonymous Story" (1893), "The Black Monk" (1894), "Murder," and "Ariadne" (1895), among many other masterpieces. Village life now became a leading theme in his work, most notably in "Peasants" (1897). Undistinguished by plot, this short sequence of brilliant sketches created more stir in Russia than any other single work of Chekhov's, partly owing to his rejection of the convention whereby writers commonly presented the Russian peasantry in sentimentalized and debrutalized form. Continuing to provide many portraits of the intelligentsia, Chekhov also described the commercial and factory-owning world in such stories as "A Woman's Kingdom," (1894) and "Three Years" (1895). As has often been recognized, Chekhov's work provides a panoramic study of the Russia of his day, and one so accurate that it could even be used as a sociological source.
