The countless stars of the dark have long inspired awe. But having deduced these small lights to be radiant suns like our own, many now wonder what lies at such faraway places. For, while we have no means of fast interstellar travel today, we can dream that our descendants will. Stars within 10 light-years of Earth:
Stars within 20 light-years of Earth:
ChView is intended as a three-dimensional aid to: viewing some of the nearer stars of our galaxy; navigating the distances between them; accessing basic information (and updating what we know); and, hopefully, having some fun. Data files updated to Hipparcos distances currently provide nearly 8,500 stars and other celestial objects believed to lie within 150 light-years (ly) of Earth, in a 300-ly diameter sphere. It is our hope that we or others will eventually create related software that can be used to use a selected star (or multiple star system) and, based on available data and known astronomical relationships, create your own star system (of planets, moons, asteroids, Kuiper belt, Oort cloud/cometary halo, and even human colonies or space communities) to voyage between them. ChView is brought to you by Jo Grant and Ben Lin with the assistance of other subscribers of the CHERRYHLIST discussion group at jaymin@maths.tcd.ie

Most SF books take place in a large and loosely connected future history, including one of my favorites, the Hugo-winning Cyteen Paladin is one of her best fantasy books (high on sword and light on sorcery).

claustrophobic but cool Have you seen our weblog or our monthly book review? C.J. Cherryh is the the author of numerous suspenseful science fiction and fantasy novels. Her heroes and heroines are generally to be found in stressful, claustrophobic situations, threatened at every turn. Often the danger is in part due to their own weaknesses. Many of her characters are extremely talented in some way, but ill-equiped to cope with the crises they are presented with. C.J. Cherryh's books tend to have complex backgrounds and political situations, about which she (as author) tells the reader remarkably little. One must read carefully, and piece things together as the book goes on. As a result, her books often make more sense on a second reading. She is quite good at making the reader feel as uneasy as her characters. I like Cherryh's work quite a bit, but I confess I need to be in the right mood. This is not light reading. Perhaps the best introduction to her work is the Chanur series, which starts with The Pride of Chanur . Pyanfar Chanur is the captain of a trading ship

    The Faded Sun
    C.J. Cherryh
Mandarin 1991 A book review by Danny Yee Originally published in three volumes over a decade ago, The Faded Sun is one of Cherryh's earliest science fiction works, and is characteristic of her output. It is a novel about an alien species called the mri, and their interactions with man and with another species called the regul. The plot involves a human joining two mri and helping them to save their species, renouncing his humanity in the process. The portrayal of alien species is one of the grand themes of science fiction. The problem is that the more plausibly alien the species, the harder it is for the reader to identify with alien characters (not to mention for the author to envisage them in the first place). The usual way around this is to use a human protagonist interacting with the aliens, or to make the aliens human enough to be understandable. Both of these solutions are used in The Faded Sun . Sten Duncan, the human protagonist, ends up joining the mri, and the mri themselves are close enough to human in both appearance and behaviour that one could read large passages involving them without realising they were alien. The mri are more an alternative culture than a different species. Cherryh portrays them skillfully, although the historical background seems a little dubious: I can't see how a species so similar to Homo sapiens in other regards could have maintained a culture without change for 80000 years. The other species involved, the regul, are not portrayed in as much depth as the mri, but are more genuinely alien. They are, in my opinion, among the most interesting of SF attempts to create an alien species. Unsexed as birth they become sexed (and almost immobile) upon maturity, and it is these elders who rule, the lives of young being almost valueless. They live up to 300 years and have eidetic memories, but no ability to imagine...

    CHERRY, CAROLINE JANICE (1942- )
Born September 1, 1942, in St. Louis, Missouri, novelist and short-story writer Caroline Janice Cherry adopted the pen name C. J. Cherryh. She moved at age seven with her family to Lawton, Oklahoma, where she was raised. She began writing as a preteenager and continued in college at the University of Oklahoma, where in 1964 she completed a bachelor's degree in Latin. In 1965 she earned a master's degree in classics at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. From 1965 to 1877 she taught Latin, Greek, and ancient history and has been a semiprofessional archeological photographer. She served as an artist in residence at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond in the 1980-81 academic year. Cherry's store of knowledge, continuing investigations in classical history and archeology, and extensive travel have enabled her to construct complex, detailed fictional worlds, often ruled by women, within her novels and novel series. She has also published short fiction and short stories. Her first science-fiction book Gate of Ivrel , published in 1976 by DAW Books, received the John W. Campbell Award for best new writer of the year from the World Science Fiction Association. Author of fifty novels, she won a 1979 Hugo Award for her short story "Cassandra" and another for her novel

    20. Review Of The Morgaine Series
A review of the author s Morgaine novels.
    http://www.phil.unt.edu/~hargrove/gate.html
    C. J. Cherryh is the author of an impressive number of books . She first achieved fame with a Hugo Award in 1981 for Downbelow Station , a complex novel about political struggle on a space station during a war between Earth and its rebellious interstellar colonies. Today she is perhaps best-known for her Cyteen trilogy, published in 1988: The Betrayal The Rebirth , and The Vindication , in which an assassinated politician on Cyteen Station, Ariane Emory, is cloned and the child raised to be the same person. To the list of exceptional books from this particular universe, I would also add Forty Thousand in Gehenna , in which colonists dropped off on a planet to establish territorial claims, and then abandoned, gradually succumb to the alien logic of the planet and its original inhabitants.
Largely forgotten, however, in her voluminous output of fantasy and science fiction is a series of four novels, the first of which began her career as a novelist. In 1976 two novels by Cherryh appeared in print, Brothers of Earth , a forerunner of her more famous science fiction novels, and Gate of Ivrel , a fantasy novel with some science fiction elements. A sequel
