Kate Chopin (1851-1904) starting writing short stories and novels after the death of her husband, Oscar, in 1882. She was able to dramatically depict the people (Creoles and 'Cadians) and places of Louisiana with careful and unforgettable detail. Kate Chopin never wrote another novel (that we know of) after "The Awakening" was such a scandal in 1899. Here, you'll find a few famous quotes from the works of Kate Chopin. zSB(3,3)

    Chopin, Kate
In 1889, Kate Chopin, 39-year-old widow and mother of 6 children, began her writing career. She turned to writing at this late age partly, it is believed, to alleviate her unhappiness after losing both her husband and her mother, and partly as a way to support her family. She quickly gained a reputation for herself and her stories and first novel were very well received by the critics and the public. But in 1899 The Awakening was published and things changed. The book was judged not on its literary merits but on its subject matter: a woman¢s challenge of the social and sexual conventions of society. It was deemed highly inappropriate and Chopin was harshly condemned. Luckily, with the passage of time, that judgement was overturned as interest in the book was renewed and it is now hailed as a classic of American literature. Chopin was born Katherine O¢Flaherty in 1850 in St Louis, Missouri. Her father was an Irish immigrant and businessman and her mother was from a wealthy French Creole family. After her father died when she was 5, Kate was raised by her mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, all three of them widows. Kate grew into a lively and independent woman, probably due in part to this wealth of strong female role models, and remained so after she married Oscar Chopin at age 19 in 1870. After a honeymoon in Europe, the couple lived in New Orleans, spending their summers in Grand Isle on the Gulf of Mexico. Kate had 6 children and by most accounts was happy in her marriage to Oscar.

"Perhaps it is better to wake up after all,
even to suffer; than to remain a dupe
to illusions all one's life." "...on a sentimental greeting card,
Kate scrawled, 'Very pretty, but where's the point?'"
"Whatever we may do or attempt, despite the embrace and transports of love, the hunger of the lips, we are always alone. I have dragged you out into the night in the vain hope of a moment's escape from the horrible solitude which overpowers me. But what is the use! I speak and you answer me, and still each of us is alone; side by side but alone.' In 1895, these words, from a story by Guy de Maupassant called 'Solitude', which she had translated for a St Louis magazine, expressed an urbane and melancholy wisdom that Kate Chopin found compelling. To a woman who had survived the illusions that friendship, romance, marriage, or even motherhood would provide lifelong companionship and identity, and who had come to recognize the existential solitude of all human beings, Maupassant's declaration became a kind of credo."
Kate Chopin: The Woman "There are some people who leave impressions not so lasting as the imprint of an oar upon the water."

Q: When was Kate Chopin born? Some internet sites say 1851 and others 1850.
A: Her tombstone says 1851, but thirty years ago a French scholar revealed that the United States census and her baptismal certificate (no birth certificate exists) show that Chopin was born on February 8, 1850. The Library of Congress has recently (in September, 2009) accepted the corrected date, but some printed sources and web sites still give her birth date as 1851. Q: Was Kate born a Chopin or is that her married name?

In Chapter XXXIV, Edna and Robert eat a simple dinner, keeping the conversation away from the emotional underpinnings of their relationship. Edna is jealous when she discovers that his tobacco pouch was a gift from a young woman in Vera Cruz. Arobin arrives and by chance comments on the remarkable beauty of Vera Cruz women. Robert leaves and Arobin lingers to read the paper and smoke a cigar. Edna sends him away and reviews the last few hours with Robert, disappointed overall.
Chapter XXXV shows Edna the next morning full of hope, feeling that she and Robert can overcome any obstacles to their love. When Robert does not visit her that day, however, she despairs, a pattern that repeats itself for days as he continues to stay away from her. Yet she avoids places where she might see him, to avoid disappointment. Her affair with Arobin continues.

    Biography of Kate Chopin
    by Neal Wyatt
Kate Chopin was born Kate O'Flaherty in St. Louis, Missouri in 1850 to Eliza and Thomas O'Flaherty. She was the third of five children, but her sisters died in infancy and her brothers (from her father's first marriage) in their early twenties. She was the only child to live past the age of twenty-five. In 1855, at five and a half, she was sent to The Sacred Heart Academy, a Catholic boarding school in St. Louis. Her father was killed two months later when a train on which he was riding crossed a bridge that collapsed. For the next two years she lived at home with her mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, all of them widows. Her great-grandmother, Victoria Verdon Charleville oversaw her education and taught her French, music, and the gossip on St. Louis women of the past. Kate O'Flaherty grew up surrounded by smart, independent, single women. They were also savvy and came from a long line of ground breaking women Victoria's own mother had been the first woman in St. Louis to obtain legal separation from her husband, after which she raised her five children and ran a shipping business on the Mississippi. Until Kate was sixteen, no married couples lived in her home, although it was full of brothers, uncles, cousins, and borders. She returned to the Sacred Heart Academy, where the nuns were known for their intelligence, and was top of her class. She won medals, was elected into the elite Children of Mary Society, and delivered the commencement address. After graduation she was a popular, if cynical, debutante. She wrote in her diary advice on flirting, "just keep asking 'What do you think?'" (Toth, 62).
