Chopin, Kate
Born Kate O'Flahrerty in St. Louis on February 8, 1850. She was the third of five children, but all of her siblings died before the age of 25. When she was five years old, her father died in a train accident. He was a prominent member of the community and was riding in the first train across a newly built bridge, when it collapsed. She was raised by her mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, all of whom were widows. After a few years as a society belle, she married Oscar Chopin in 1870, the son of a wealthy cotton farmer in Louisiana. They had much in common including the ability to speak French and a casual disregard of their Catholic upbringings. They had their honeymoon in Europe where Kate emancipated herself through such "unwomanly" activities like smoking and drinking beer in public. For several years they lived in New Orlean
It was then that she began to write professionally. Her first story, "Wiser than God" was published in 1889. In the years following, she found a good deal of success publishing in national periodicals. She soon published two collections of short stories, Bayou Folk (1894) and A Night in Acadie (1897). Her first novel was entitled At Fault (1890). The publication of The Awakening (1899) met with a good deal of controversy and negative reviews because of its anti-traditional depictions of female sexuality. After the reaction to her novel, Chopin wrote only a few more stories. Soon after, her health began to fail and she died on August 22, 1904 after having suffering a brain hemorrhage two days earlier.

Chopin, Kate
American writer, known for her depictions of culture in New Orleans, Louisiana, and of women's struggles for freedom. Chopin was born Katherine O'Flaherty in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1870 she married Oscar Chopin, a Creole cotton trader, and moved with him to New Orleans. After a business failure, the family moved to a plantation near Cloutierville, Louisiana, where her husband died in 1882. In 1884 Chopin returned to St. Louis with her six children. There she maintained a literary salon and began her writing career.
For more than a decade following her first published story in 1889, Chopin depicted the manners, customs, speech, and surroundings of Louisiana's Creole and Cajun residents. Two collections of her short fiction were published in the 1890s: Bayou Folk (1894) and A Night in Acadie (1897). Both works were well-received as examples of "local-color" literature and helped establish Chopin's reputation as a major contributor to Southern regional literature. Chopin also produced a substantial body of poetry, reviews, and criticism. As her later stories, such as "The Story of an Hour," began to emphasize women's need for independence and capacity for passion, editors became less receptive to her work.
Chopin published a novel, At Fault, in 1890 at her own expense. Several publishers rejected her second novel, and she destroyed the manuscript. The Awakening (1899), the novel now considered her masterpiece, attracted a storm of negative criticism for its lyrical depiction of a woman's developing independence and sensuality. Subsequently, her editors suspended publication of her third collection of stories, A Vocation and a Voice. The collection was not published until 1991. As a result of the negative criticism and social ostracism that followed The Awakening, Chopin produced few additional writings, and over the next half-century her work became obscure. It was rediscovered in the 1960s.

Chopin, Kate,
KATHERINE O'FLAHERTY (b. Feb. 8, 1851, St. Louis, Mo., U.S.d. Aug. 22, 1904, St. Louis), American novelist and short-story writer known as an interpreter of New Orleans culture. There was a revival of interest in Chopin in the late 20th century because her concerns about the freedom of women foreshadowed later feminist literary themes. Chopin lived in Louisiana after her marriage (1870) to Oscar Chopin; after his death she began to write about the Creole and Cajun people she had observed in the South. Her first novel, At Fault In 1899 Chopin published The Awakening, a realistic novel about the sexual and artistic awakening of a young wife and mother who abandons her family and eventually commits suicide. This work was roundly condemned in its time because of its sexual frankness and went out of print for more than 50 years. It was rediscovered in the 1950s and has received critical acclaim for the beauty of its writing and for its modern sensibility. Chopin's work has been compared to that of George Washington Cable, a local-colourist who took a more literary approach to character treatment. Chopin, in contrast, was more of a realist, using "local colour" to depict the interactions of men and women.

Chopin, Kate -The Story of an Hour
When I finished reading for the first time “The Story of an Hour,” I felt a bit confused. It takes a couple of twists and turns that makes the ending ironic and unobvious. I have read the story a few times, but I still think there’s more to what I think or know. The story was written in the 1850’s. Also by reading Chopin’s biography, the story was towards feminism. Mrs. Mallard represented the women of the time. Women, meaning they sometimes did not marry because of love, but because of the stability of which the husband offered.
