The Story of the Grail
by
Introduction My interest in the Grail legend has been going on for the last twelve years, since I chose the name Perceval for my son. At that time I was working in a French bookstore, and discovered the different texts of the grail legend. At that time, also, there was an increased interest in such legends in France, and many publishers have since published their own editions of either this text, or collections of Arthurian legends. While there are many versions of the story, this particular version, the first one written, is psychologically the most powerful. It is one of the great myths of the western world, and I feel that it should be better known. I was astounded to discover that this great spiritual classic has been virtually ignored by English language publishers, at least as a true literary work. There are naturally other translations available of the Conte du Graal ; they are probably mostly read by college students studying medieval literature. I would like to see this story take its rightful place as one of the classics of spiritual literature, and one of the most powerful myths in the West.

Chretien de Troyes was a twelfthcentury French court poet who played a major part in shaping both the tone and the subject matter of popular literature, not only in his own time, but to our own day. He helped to popularize the legends of King Arthur and the knights of the Round Table as a subject of literature, and to him, in large measure, we "owe the colour" in which Arthurian subject matter is still presented, as recently as the 1964 movie "Camelot."1 This paper is a study of the role which Chretien de Troyes played, specifically, in the development of the medieval tradition of " courtly love To understand the importance of Chretien de Troyes in Western literature, and in our very ways of thinking, we may begin by considering the word romance. It has three main meanings in English. Two are fairly closely related; the third has no obvious connection to either of them. By far the most familiar meaning, the meaning that most people will immediately think of on hearing the word romance is "love affair." Two people falling in love are said to be having a romance. A romance novel is a novel about a love affair. An atmosphere which we associate with love affairs candlelight dinners, soft music, walks by moonlight is called a romantic atmosphere. The second, related meaning of romance is a story or atmosphere of adventure. It is related to the most familiar meaning because a love affair is supposed to be an adventure of sorts, and because in o

by David Nash Ford
The earliest full stories concerning King Arthur and his exploits appear to be the little known Welsh tales of "Culhwch and Olwen" and the "Dream of Rhonabwy". Though dating from before the 11th century, these two stories became a late attachment to a collection of Welsh mythological tales taken from the 14th century White Book of Rhydderch and Red Book of Hergest. Together, they are known as the " Mabinogion ": an introduction for aspiring poets.
Though the stories have a mythological slant, a certain amount of bardic poetic license is to be expected. Their background, however, is clearly an unfamiliar Dark Age society that gives us some idea of what the realArthur was probably like. The much-maligned Geoffrey of Monmouth , Archdeacon of Monmouth and later Bishop of St. Asaphs, first popularized King Arthur's story, around 1136, in his "History of the Kings of Britain". Though he was writing some six hundred years after Arthur's death, there is no reason to suppose that Geoffrey's history was "made up...from an inordinate love of lying" as both contemporary and modern historians almost universally insist. Geoffrey claimed he had taken most of his information from an earlier British source (he referred to it as "a certain, very ancient book written in the British language"; ed.), unknown to us today.

See biography quotes Chrétien de Troyes was a French poet and trouvère who flourished in the late 12th century. Little is known of his life, but he seems to have been from Troyes, or at least intimately connected with it, and between 1160 and 1181 he served at the court of his patroness Countess Marie de Champagne, daughter of Eleanor of Aquitaine, perhaps as herald-at-arms (as Gaston Paris speculated). His work on Arthurian subjects represents some of the best of medieval literature.

It tells the story of the knight Cligès and his love for his uncle's wife, Fenice. Because of the story's de-romanticized depiction of adultery , it has been called a criticism or parody of the Tristan and Isolde romances citation needed Cligès scholar Lucie Polak not only verifies the Tristan and Isolde reworking found in the text, but also suggests that Cligès may be modeled after Ovid's character Narcissus. Cligès opening lines give some of the only extant information on the creator's biography and earlier work. The story starts with Alexander, the son of the Greek emperor (also called Alexander), who comes to
