Marcus Tullius Cicero (January 3, 106 B.C.E. – December 7, 43 B.C.E. ) Cicero was a Roman lawyer, statesman, philosopher and writer who lived during the most brilliant era of Roman public life. An academic skeptic and a Stoic, he devoted himself to applying philosophical theory to politics, with the aim of bringing about a better Roman Republic. He translated Greek works into Latin, and wrote Latin summaries of the teachings of the Greek philosophical schools, hoping to make them more accessible and understandable for Roman leaders. Many of Cicero’s original works are still in existence. For Cicero, politics took precedence over philosophy. Most of his philosophical works were written at intervals when he was unable to participate in public life, and with the intent of influencing the political leaders of the time. He was elected to each of the principal Roman offices ( quaestor aedile praetor , and consul ) at the earliest legal age, and thus became a member of the Senate. He became deeply involved in the political conflicts of Rome, an involvement which led to his exile during 58-57 B.C.E.

Cicero:
Selected Letters
Introduction The letters of Cicero are of a varied character. They range from the most informal communications with members of his family to serious and elaborate compositions which are practically treatises in epistolary form. A very large proportion of them were obviously written out of the mood of the moment, with no thought of the possibility of publication; and in these the style is comparatively relaxed and colloquial. Others, addressed to public characters, are practically of the same nature as his speeches, discussions of political questions intended to influence public opinion, and performing a function in the Roman life of the time closely analogous to that fulfilled at the present day by articles in the great reviews, or editorials in prominent journals. In the case of both of these two main groups the interest is twofold: personal and historical, though it is naturally in the private letters that we find most light thrown on the character of the writer. In spite of the spontaneity of these epistles there exists a great difference of opinion among scholars as to the personality revealed by them, and both in the extent of the divergence of view and in the heat of the controversy we are reminded of modern discussions of the characters of men such as Gladstone or Roosevelt. It has been fairly said that there is on the whole more chance of justice to Cicero from the man of the world who understands how the stress and change of politics lead a statesman into apparently inconsistent utterances than from the professional scholar who subjects these utterances to the severest logical scrutiny, without the illumination of practical experience.

Cicero
Marcus Tullius Cicero (January 3, 106 BC - December 7, 43 BC) was a Roman statesman, lawyer, political theorist, and philosopher. Cicero is widely considered one of Rome's greatest orators and prose stylists. Biography Cicero was born in Arpinum and killed at Formia, fleeing from political enemies. "It is no exaggeration", wrote Taylor (as cited in "References"), "to say that the most brilliant era of Roman public life was ushered in by Cicero and closed by his death - he stood at its cradle and he followed its hearse." His family, the Tullii, were one of the landed gentry in Arpinum and resented the fame and fortunes of the other great Arpinate families, the Marii. Throughout his life, the conservative Cicero loathed being compared to the then more famous Marius. The name "Cicero" is derived from cicer, the Latin word for "chickpea." Plutarch explains that the name was originally applied to one of Cicero's ancestors who had a cleft in the tip of his nose, which resembled that of a chickpea. In fact (Plutarch continues), Cicero was urged to change the theretofore-ignoble name when he entered politics, but he refused. Early life According to Plutarch, he was an extremely adept student, learning so well and rapidly that he attracted attention from all over Rome. He was especially fond of poetry, although he shied away from no scholarly field. In 89 BC-88 BC, Cicero served on the staffs of Gnaeus Pompeius Strabo and Lucius Cornelius Sulla as they campaigned in the Social War, though he had no taste for war. Cicero also had a love for almost everything Greek, and even stated in his will that he wanted to be buried in Greece. He found the ancient philosophers such as Plato very thought provoking.Cicero served as quaestor in western Sicily in 75 BC.

Cicero on Ethics
This chapter has been published in the book . For ordering information please click here. Roman culture originated out of Etruscan rituals and religion and was influenced greatly by the Greeks. Livy described how Etruscan dance and music were introduced in Rome during a plague in 364 BC to appease the gods. Histrionic gestures were developed into dialogs with plots adapted from Greek tragedies and comedies by a Greek slave named Livius Andronicus by 240 BC. Andronicus translated Homer's Odyssey into Latin, and it was used in schools for generations. Short Oscan plays from Campania using mime called fabula Atellana were based on the characters of the stupid clown Maccus, the bragging glutton Bucco, the foolish old Pappus, and the hunchback trickster Dossennus. In the late third century BC Gnaeus Naevius wrote an epic on the first Punic war , a few tragedies about the Trojan war, and dozens of comedies based on Greek plays as well as one play about Romulus and Remus and one about the victory by consul Marcellus over the Insubrian Gauls in 222 BC; the plays of Naevius were so critical of political figures that he was imprisoned and went into exile. Greek tragedies were also adapted by Quintius Ennius (239-169 BC), Marcus Pacuvius (c. 220-c. 130 BC), and Lucius Accius (170-c. 86 BC), and Greek comedies were translated by the freed Insubrian slave Caecilius Statius (c. 219-c. 166 BC), but these are all lost.

Cicero and the Roman Republic
Works cited

The late Roman Republic was quickly becoming an Empire. It finally ended after many civil wars. Generals and Politicians wanted more power than was allotted by the republic constitution. Cicero was one important politician who firmly believed in the republic. He worked to prevent dictators and maintain the repulic as government.
Government of the Roman Republic
The Roman Republic was unique in that it gave the people a voice in the government. In 509 BC, after experiencing the corrupt king Tarquin, the people of Rome decided to establish the consul system, which became, along with all the other offices and areas of the government, the republic. These offices included:
  • praetor
  • questor
  • aedille
  • governor
  • tribune
  • senator
Some of these were established later than others. In the system that the early Romans set up, people were allowed some say in who held the political offices. Any adult male citizen could vote under the system. The set up of the Republic allowed checks to prevent the abuse of power. These checks were created by having short terms and a least two officers in each government position.
Cicero's Belief in the Republic
Cicero was an ardent supporter of the republican system of Rome. He believed in "Senatus populusque Romanus," the senate and the Roman people as the core of Roman Republic (Cowell), he believed in the Republic. As long as he had lived, he had prospered from the republic system. His life began in the non-statesman class of equestrians. He received an excellent education from some of the greatest thinkers of the day. His training in oration made him one of the outstanding speakers of the day. He then used his fame to gain political offices, starting with quaestor in 75 BC
