Beverly Cleary Beverly Cleary was born in McMinnville, Oregon, and, until she was old enough to attend school, lived on a farm in Yamhill, a town so small it had no library. Her mother arranged with the State Library to have books sent to Yamhill and acted as librarian in a lodge room upstairs over a bank. There young Beverly learned to love books. However, when the family moved to Portland, Beverly soon found herself in the grammar school's low reading circle, an experience that has given her sympathy for the problems of struggling readers. By the third grade she had conquered reading and spent much of her childhood either with books or on her way to and from the public library. Before long her school librarian was suggesting that she should write for boys and girls when she grew up. The idea appealed to her, and she decided that someday she would write the books she longed to read but was unable to find on the library shelves, funny stories about her neighborhood and the sort of children she knew. And so Ramona Quimby, Henry Huggins, Ellen Tebbits, and her other beloved characters were born. When children ask Mrs. Cleary where she finds her ideas, she replies, "From my own experience and from the world around me." She included a passage about the D.E.A.R. program in Ramona Quimby, Age 8 (second chapter) because she was inspired by letters she received from children who participated in "Drop Everything and Read" activities. Their interest and enthusiasm encouraged her to provide the same experience to Ramona, who enjoys D.E.A.R. time with the rest of her class.

Cleary was born in McMinnville, Oregon , the only child of Chester Lloyd Bunn and Mabel Atlee. Her great-grandfather was Jacob Hawn (Haun) of Haun's Mill . Spending her earliest years on a small farm, Atlee felt that this was a disadvantage for the students at the small farm school, and she made arrangements to have books sent there from the state library. As a result, Cleary grew to love books. When Cleary was six years old, her family left the farm and moved to

    Beverly Cleary Sculpture Garden
Ramona Quimby is the beloved young heroine of Beverly Cleary's whimsical books about growing up in Northeast Portland. She has been immortalized in the Beverly Cleary Sculpture Garden for Children in Portland's Grant Park (which is four blocks from the real Klickitat Street). Portland artist Lee Hunt sculpted the statues of the three Cleary characters in clay, and then had them cast in bronze. Fountains are under Ramona's and Ribsy's feet, perfect for kids to splash in during warm weather. Around the concrete fountain slab are granite plaques engraved with the titles of the Cleary books that take place in Portland. These include all the Henry Huggins books, Ribsy Otis Spofford and all the books involving Ramona and her older sister Beezus. The dedication of the Beverly Cleary Sculpture Garden on October 13, 1995 was a great celebration! Over 1000 people came on a beautiful afternoon to see local actors in the roles of Henry, Ribsy and Ramona, unveil the three sculptures. Beverly Cleary spoke about growing up in the neighborhood and shared her memories of Grant Park and Grant High School in the 1930s. The sculpture garden is just south of the playground in Grant Park on N.E. 33rd Ave., between Knott Street and Broadway, adjacent to Grant High School. You can't see it from 33rd; you must actually come into the park to find the statues. The Portland Parks Department will turn on the water when weather and conditions permit.

We haven't read any new Ramona Quimby adventures in about 15 years, but she is back, and she is more fun than ever. Ramona's World finds Ramona entering the fourth grade, longing for a best girlfriend, and still being happily disgusted by Yard Ape. BookPage had the delightful opportunity to talk to Newbery Medalist Beverly Cleary about her writing, her life, and her beloved Ramona Geraldine Quimby. Cleary became interested in writing for children because reading meant so much to her as a child. "I was a great reader of fairy tales. I tried to read the entire fairy tale section of the library: Andrew Lang's Blue Fairy Book, Red Fairy Book, and so on, probably down to the Puce or Chartreuse fairy tales," she laughs. These days, Cleary reads biographies and some fiction by English women writers. Ramona was first introduced to readers in the 1950s as a peripheral character (Cleary interjects "a nuisance") in the Henry Huggins books. Had she visualized developing Ramona's character, or did Ramona take on a life of her own? "Well, I didn't visualize anything more about Ramona. In fact, she was an accidental character. It occurred to me that as I wrote, all of these children appeared to be only children, so I tossed in a little sister, and at that time, we had a neighbor named Ramona. I heard somebody call out, 'Ramona!' so I just named her Ramona."

Book Summary of The Ramona Collection, Volume 1: Ramona And Her Father/Ramona The Brave/Ramona The Pest/Beezus And Ramona
This wonderful Ramona Box Set, by Beverly Cleary, contains four books: " Ramona the Brave,"" Ramona the Pest,"" Beezus and Ramona," and" Ramona Quimby, Age 8," "Beezus and Ramona" Beezus tries very hard to be patient with her little sister, but four-your-old Ramona has a habit of doing the most unpredictable, annoying, embarrassing things in the world. Sometimes Beezus doesn't like Ramona much, and that makes her feel guilty. Sisters are supposed to love each other, but pesky little Ramona doesn't seem very lovable to Beezus right now. "Ramona the Pest" Ramona is off to kindergarten, and it is the greatest day of her life. She loves her teacher, Miss Binney, and she likes a little boy named Davy so much she wants to kiss him. So why does Ramona get in so much trouble? And how does Ramona manage to disrupt the whole class during rest time? Anyone who knows Ramona knows that she never tries to be a pest.
