Fiction Harvard Classics Mark Twain Jim Smily and His Jumping Frog ... BIBLIOGRAPHIC RECORD Samuel L. Clemens Jim Smily and His Jumping Frog. The Harvard Classics Shelf of Fiction. Biographical Note S AMUEL L ANGHORNE C LEMENS, Mark Twain is most widely known as a humorist, and among American humorists it may fairly be claimed that he stands first. In his comic exaggeration and solemn, inextricable mingling of fact and absurdity he was carried to its highest point the type of humor most characteristic of this country. But he was much more than a humorist. He was a master of simple and effective narrative and of vivid description; and his novels of the Mississippi belong to that valuable class which have fixed for posterity a whole phase of life that has passed away. Moreover, underneath his comedy there lay depths of a somewhat melancholy wisdom, and a great capacity for righteous indignation. More and more America has come to recognize that her chief master of comedy was also a sage.

With Keokuk Relatives Mark Twain and His Mother Some Reminiscences
of Sam Clemens' Early Life in This City
Following the Twain-Cable entertainment Wednesday evening there was a bit of recitation of which only a few who were straggling in the rear of the out surging crowds were the auditors. As he had arrived in the city on the evening train from Hannibal only a few moments before the hour of going upon the stage, Mark Twain had not met his kinfolks living in the city. At the conclusion of the entertainment and after the usual hand-shaking with his old friends the great humorist began stretching his neck toward the box his mother had occupied during the evening, but she had withdrawn and his eyes caught sight of the silver-haired old lady in the rear of the opera house sitting among a circle of relatives and friends awaiting his coming. He came, and quickly. "Why, Sam, I didn't know you," was the mother's greeting as he gave her a kiss and a hug. "That's because I'm getting so good-looking," was the reply as he re-performed the bear act.

    Napoleon, Arkansas
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Coordinates 33°47′49″N ... 33.797°N 91.074°W Napoleon is a ghost town in Desha County Arkansas United States , near the confluence of the Arkansas and Mississippi rivers. Once the county seat of Desha County, Napoleon was flooded when the banks of the Mississippi River burst through and destroyed the once-thriving river port town. The town was the subject of a narrative in Mark Twain 's Life on the Mississippi , in which 10,000 dollars had been hidden behind a brick in a building there. Twain says he learned of the money's whereabouts but upon trying to retrieve it discovered the entire town has been washed away. Twain reports that the early explorers De Soto Marquette and Joliet , and La Salle visited "the site of the future town of Napoleon, Arkansas" in their pioneering journeys. In 1852, Bolivar County, Mississippi, established its county seat nearly opposite Napoleon, Arkansas, on the east bank of the Mississippi River. It was named "Wellington," according to the History of Bolivar County Mississippi, published in 1948 by the Mississippi Delta Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. No records exist as to why Bolivar County leaders chose Wellington as the county seat's name, but the choice may have had something to do with the meeting of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte of France and the Duke of Wellington, the British general, at the Battle of Waterloo earlier in the century. There would have been a natural rivalry between business and civic leaders in Desha County, Arkansas, and Bolivar County, Mississippi, for river-related commerce at the confluence of the Arkansas and Mississippi Rivers. Like Napoleon, Wellington no longer exists.
