With the bookplate, signed by its designer, George Wharton Edwards, of The Authors Club library affixed to the front pastedown endpaper. Also signed by the author on a sheet of fine paper tipped to the front free endaper: "S.L. Clemens / Mark Twain." Slight offsetting from Edwards' bookplate (faintly shadowing Twain's signatures); a fine, bright copy. The Authors Club of New York was organised in 1882. Its membership included virtually every notable American literary figure of the day and several honorary members from England (Thomas Hardy, for example). According to the constitution as printed in its manual for 1910, an object of the Club was "the acquisition and maintenance of an appropriate library." Edwards designed the Club's bookplate in 1896. Clemens was a "regular member" from 1885-1906 and an honorary member from 1906 until his death on April 21, 1910.
