"My notion of a story is a set of problems."
Hal Clement Stubbs grew up in Greater Boston, attending schools in Arlington and Cambridge, finishing Rindge Tech in 1939. He received his B.S. in astronomy from Harvard in 1943. While at college, Hal had his first science fiction short story, "Proof," published by Astounding in its June 1942 issue. Clement's first novel, Needle , was sandwiched in between wars as a serial in Astounding in 1949. Arguably his best novel was Mission of Gravity which appeared in 1953. Hal was intelligent, experienced, and educated...so he never had a problem selling what he wrote. He let the theme determine the length of his works and wrote a little of everything, seeming to prefer the flexible form of the novel. Among those were Iceworld, Close to Critical, Star Light, Through the Eye of a Needle

Biography
American writer who wrote for years in his spare time while teaching science at Milton Academy, MA. After serving in the USAF in WW II as a co-pilot of the B-24 for 33 combat missions in Europe, he completed his education with degrees in astronomy, education and chemistry. He was a scoutmaster of long standing. First published in 1942, Clement built a reputable name for himself in the sci-fi genre with notable novels and short stories, many in "Astounding Sci-Fi." With work that was based on factual science, both educational and entertaining, he was the epitome of "hard science" writers. He died in his sleep at home in Milton, MA on October 29, 2003, age 81. SCIENCE FICTION When one reads Clement's (born Harry Clement Stubbs) work you can't help but think that he could be the progenitor of the more famous SCI-FI writers we all know, like Arthur C. Clark and Issac Asimov. He shares the similar backgound of many authors who've hit thier stride in the mid-section of the last century, he has a scientific background ( B.S. in astronomy from Harvard, and a Masters in Chemistry) as well as a military tint from his tour as a pilot in WWII. His stories have the feel of the classic 50's-60's work where you can envision the space craft as almost silvery, cigar-shaped rockets that land on it's fins. It also deals with the concept of technology versus religion on a subconscious level as well as perhaps a touch of the Twilight Zone feel with hidden meanings that make you sit down and think about what you'd had read. There is also that aura of the cold war in the background that tinges how societies are run in the future that stamps Hal's work in the period it came from. At least in the short stories, they seem to deal with a military presence or large governmental systems in dealing with the issues of space and the phenominums found there. The bulk of his work deals with the way-faring space stories full of the imagery like the movies

the dark companion of Lalande 21185 American science fiction writer (real name Harry Clement Stubbs) and college physics teacher, with degrees in astronomy and chemistry, who speculated in detail about the intelligent life-forms that might evolve on a world of extremely high gravity (see gravitational life
His books Mission of Gravity Close to Critical (1964), and Starlight (1971), explore the biology and physics of a giant, rapidly-spinning planet, Mesklin, whose effective gravity varies from 3 times (at the equator) to 700 times (at the pole) that of the Earth. Also described in Close to Critical g gravity (Mesklin's equatorial value). The title refers to water's critical point which Tenebrae dips below at night causing immense raindrops to form. Robert Forward presents an even more extreme setting than Mesklin for gravitational life in his Dragon's Egg and Starquake
