Background: Lucille Clifton was born in Depaw, New York, in 1936, and educated at the State University of New York at Fredonia and at Howard University. She is the only author to have two books of poetry chosen as finalists for the Pulitzer Prize in one year: Good Woman : Poems and a Memoir 1969-1980 and Next: New Poems. These were followed by Quilting Poems 1987-1990 and The Book of Light. Her awards include the Juniper Prize for Poetry, an Emmy Award from the American Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, and two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts. She has taught at the University of California at Santa Cruz and American University in Washington, D.C. and is presently Distinguished Professor of Humanities at St. Mary's College of Maryland. Scope: This work was created from original footage that has been cataloged with "Poetry Breaks II, Lucille Clifton." This original footage was used to create both this work for schools and libraries and the broadcast master. A Betacam SP preservation master (made from the digital betacam master) and a VHS screening copy have been created. Educational print materials designed to accompany the work contains a biography of the poet and questions emphasizing the experience of the poem.
