A deeply moving first novel by a superb new talent, Flesh Wounds belongs on the shelf next to Anne Tyler, Jane Hamilton and Jacquelyn Michard. In scenes of shattering dramatic intensity, Mick Cochrane tells the story of a midwestern family waking up to the unpleasant truths that it would rather keep hiddena wrenching process that ends on a genuinely moving and wholly earned note of reconciliation and renewal.
For this issue of Bold Type , Cochrane has contributed an essay on human nature and how his writing aims to plumb its depths. You'll also find an excerpt from the novel that paints a sharp portrait of a man whose past is quickly catching up with him.

7. Bold Type: Essay By Mick Cochrane
Essay by Mick Cochrane from Bold Type.
http://www.randomhouse.com/boldtype/0997/cochrane/essay.html
In Flesh Wounds, there's not much nature of the Wordsworthian rainbow and daffodil variety, little flora and less fauna, just a few houseplants and a couple of dogs. That's about it. It's the story of a midwestern family. There are no waterfalls, no mountains, no killer storms. A big blizzard is predicted but never materializes. If pressed about setting, I would be tempted to say, like Raymond Carver, that most of my fiction takes place indoors and leave it at that.
Maybe I'm nature impaired. Like one of my characters who is a confirmed and unrepentant garbage-snatcher, my heart leaps up when I behold a rickety rocking chair, a discarded child's desk. I am fascinated by the homely artifacts of everyday life, by the stories they tell. House-hunting with my wife several years ago, I proved utterly incapable of making any sensible judgments about the structure we examined: I was too distracted by the pictures on the mantel and the artwork on the fridge, by the posters and trophies in the bedroom, by the bedside books. I was too busy trying to imagine the lives lived in the house, feeling heavy sometimes with the particular heartacheillness, divorce, old agethat put a house on the market.
Truth be told, I am more interested in the contents of a junk drawer that I am a cloud formation; I'd rather poke around your attic than stare at a sunset; if I listen to warblers warble too long, I get bored, which never happens when I am eavesdropping on the subway, say, gathering up snippets of overheard conversations. These are scraps of narrative, pieces of a lifethe stuff of humanity. It may be garbage to you, Bernie Beerman, my trash man in Minnesota, used to tell me. But it's my bread and butter.

SUMMARY A nostalgic story about a Minnesota boy's search for belonging in a complex world. "In this wise, witty story set in West St. Paul in the '60s, a kid named Harlan navigates life by focusing on the Twins baseball team, a comic metaphor for hope. Sport is fat with small pleasures. It is a homer and a gift to all of us grownup knothole-game kids. 10. Bold Type: Excerpt By Mick Cochrane
An excerpt from the novel by Mick Cochrane.
http://www.randomhouse.com/boldtype/0997/cochrane/excerpt.html
He made the light on Fifty-fourth, but was held up at the on-ramp of 35W behind a blonde applying mascara in the rearview mirror. Finally, he got on the freeway. He headed north, against the rush hour traffic, into the Minneapolis suburbsCoon Rapids, Anoka, Elk River, where he used to stop for pancakes with Geoff on their way up to Mille Lacs to go fishing. He turned on the radio and set the cruise control and tried to think. What was happening?
One fine day there had been a gray-haired policewoman in pants at the door, a uniformed stranger with a spiral notebook. She sat on the couch and smiled demurely, like the Avon lady. She cleared her throat and talked about agencies and reports, authorities and procedures, a preliminary investigation, so roundabout at first he thought his granddaughter was dead. And then she told him it was him. The more they talkedhow many ways can you say, I don't know what you're talking about?the more she treated him like a criminal. She didn't know the first thing about him. And when she finally left, her eyes scanning the room, studying the photos on the mantel, looking for something suspicious, promising she would be back, his heart was beating in his chest like an angry fist.
His daughter Eleanor was making accusations now, too. She had always been an imaginative child. She used to play alone in her room for hours and hours, inventing names and personalities for all her dolls and stuffed animals. She had a flair for the dramatic, was a sidesplitting mimic of her teachers, easily slipped into the speech and mannerisms of the people she was around. And she loved to performdances, puppet shows, and especially playswhich she would write and direct and star in, drafting her brothers and sister and him, too, into supporting roles, handing them neatly typed scripts complete with stage directions and pauses for laughter and applause. He could remember roaring and rattling tire chains as Marley's ghost one Christmas. And now her life was not turning out the way that she wantedwhose did?and she needed a villain, and she'd assigned him the part.

2010 Mock Newbery Awards
We need nominations from you now. Last year we had a great time guessing what books might win the Newbery Award. We didn't get them right, but we read a lot of great books. Let's start early this year with possible nominations. Respond to this blog with the name of a great book you want to nominate and a short supporting statement. If you have read the same book as somebody else say whether you agree with them. Remember: the book must be published in 2009 and written for children or young adults by an author residing in the United States. That's why J.K. Rowling has never been eligible for the award. Here's a list of our nominations:
FIC COC The Girl who Threw Butterflies Cochrane, Mick.
jFIC DIC The Magician's Elephant DiCamillo, Kate.
jFIC ENG Tropical Secrets: Holocaust Refugees in Cuba Engle, Margarita.
92 Colvin Claudette Colvin: Twice Toward Justice Hoose, Phillip M.,
jFIC KEL The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate Kelly , Jacqueline.
jFIC LIN Where the Mountain Meets the Moon Lin, Grace.
