Collins was born in London , the son of a well-known Royal Academician landscape artist, William Collins . Named after his father, he swiftly became known by his second name (which honoured his godfather, David Wilkie ). From the ages of 12-15 he lived with his parents in Italy , which made a great impression on him. At the age of 17 he left school and was apprenticed as a clerk to a firm of tea merchants, but after five unhappy years, during which he wrote his first novel, Iolani , he entered Lincoln's Inn to study law. ( Iolani remained unpublished for over 150 years until 1999.) After his father's death in 1847, Collins produced his first published book

William Wilkie Collins
This page last revised 7 November 2000 I am grateful to Paul Lewis for use of the image of Collins. William Wilkie Collins was born in London on January 8 1824, the son of the renowned painter William Collins (1788-1847). His father was a religious man, who was disappointed by his son's freethinking nature: Collins refused to conform to parental expectation, failing to make a career at the tea-merchants Antrobus and Co., to which he was apprenticed at the age of seventeen, and at the law, which he entered as a student in 1846. Collins was twenty-two when his father died, and was now determined to become a professional writer. His first book, published in November 1948, was Memoirs of the Life of William Collins, R.A. , but, as Julian Symons comments, "he settled after this act of piety to a life of which his father would strongly have disapproved" (8). In a writing career that lasted from 1843, when he published his first story in The Illuminated Magazine , until his death in 1889, Wilkie Collins wrote thirty-three books, and numerous plays and short stories. Although he was already an established writer with the publication of the memoir of his father and his first novel

Collins, (William) Wilkie
(b. Jan. 8, 1824, Londond. Sept. 23, 1889, London), early master of the mystery story and the first English novelist to write in this genre. The son of William Collins (1788-1847), the landscape painter, he developed a gift for inventing tales while still a schoolboy at a private boarding school. At an early age he was placed in the tea trade, where his performance was undistinguished. After studying law at Lincoln's Inn, he was admitted to the bar in 1851 but proved to have as little aptitude for law as for commerce. He worked, instead, on an historical novel, painted well enough to have a picture hung at the Royal Academy, engaged in theatricals, and visited Paris. His first published work was a memoir to his father, who died in 1847, Memoirs of the Life of William Collins, Esq., R.A. (1848). His fiction followed shortly after: Antonina; or, the Fall of Rome (1850) and Basil (1852), a highly coloured tale of seduction and vengeance with a contemporary middle-class setting and passages of uncompromising realism. In 1851 he began an association with Dickens that exerted a formative influence on his career. Their admiration was mutual. Under Dickens' influence, Collins developed a talent for characterization, humour, and popular success, while the older writer's debt to Collins is evident in the more skillful and suspenseful plot structures of such novels as
