Biography
Polish-British adventurer and writer who was famous for his romantic and tragic stories about intrigue and life in Malaya, the Congo and Europe. His novels included "Tales of Unrest," 1898, his famous "Lord Jim," 1900 and "Personal Records," 1912. Conrad was a delicate child and a high-strung young man who tired easily. In 1890, in the Congo, he became severely ill with fever and dysentery; healed slowly, and for the rest of his life was not entirely well. On 8/02/1924, his son Borys brought his wife and newborn son Philip to see Conrad at his 18th century home in Kent. Conrad was propped up in bed smoking his usual cigarette. Far into the night he talked with his son, with whom he had a close and loving relationship. During the night he got out of bed and was sitting in the armchair when he died, 8/03/1924, Bishopsbourne, England.

"The horror! The horror!" (Heart of Darkness)
"He passes away under a cloud, inscrutable at heart, forgotten, unforgiven, and excessively romantic. Not in the wildest days of his boyish visions could he have seen the shape of such an extraordinary success!" (Lord Jim) Joseph Conrad was born Josef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski, the only child of Polish parents in the Russian-controlled Ukraine. His father, Apollo Nalecz Korzeniowski was involved with the covert national Polish movement and was arrested by the Russian authorities in 1861 for patriotic conspiracy. Conrad and his mother, Evelina Bobrowska, were exiled with Apollo to Northern Russia and Evelina died during this period in 1865. By the time of Apollo's conditional parole in 1867 he was physically broken, dying two years later in Cracow. Conrad was left orphaned and the ward of his maternal uncle, Tadeusz Bobrowski. Timeline Joseph Conrad was born in Berdichev, Ukraine. His family was exiled to Northern Russia as a result of his father`s political activities. Both of Conrad`s parents died of tuberculosis and he went to Switzerland to live with his uncle. Approx 1870 Conrad attended school in Kraków but he dreamed of the sea and in the 1870`s he joined the French merchant marines. While working on a ship Conrad made voyages to the West Indies and was even involved in arms smuggling Conrad joined the British merchant navy and swiftly climbed the ranks. Eventually he was commanding his own ship and was given British citizenship. It was at this time that he officially changed his name to Joseph Conrad. At the age of 36 Conrad finally left the sea behind him and settled down in England. Two years later he married an Englishwoman by the name of Jessie George, and it was with her that he had two sons. Almayer`s Folly was published.

The following is a Gaslight etext.... A message to you about
THE INN OF THE TWO WITCHES:
A FIND
(June, 1913)
by Joseph Conrad T HIS tale, episode, experiencecall it how you willwas related in the fifties of the last century by a man who, by his own confession, was sixty years old at the time. Sixty is not a bad age unless in perspective, when no doubt it is contemplated by the majority of us with mixed feelings. It is a calm age; the game is practically over by then; and standing aside one begins to remember with a certain vividness what a fine fellow one used to be. I have observed that, by an amiable attention of Providence, most people at sixty begin to take a romantic view of themselves. Their very failures exhale a charm of peculiar potency. And indeed the hopes of the future are a fine company to live with, exquisite forms, fascinating if you like, butso to speaknaked, stripped for a run. The robes of glamour are luckily the property of the immovable past which, without them, would sit, a shivery sort of thing, under the gathering shadows. I suppose it was the romanticism of growing age which set our man to relate his experience for his own satisfaction or for the wonder of his posterity. It could not have been for his glory, because the experience was simply that of an abominable frightterror he calls it. You would have guessed that the relation alluded to in the very first lines was in writing.
