Catherine Cookson (1906-1998) British writer who published over 90 highly popular novels which have been translated into twenty languages, among others into Finnish (over 30 works). In the 1990s Cookson's books have sold 90 million copies. Cookson became especially famous for her family sagas set against the backdrop of England in the 19th century. She wrote under the pseudonym Catherine Marchant, and produced three different series of books: the Bill Bailey series, Mary Ann series, and the Mallen series. "I was a story-teller from the time I could talk, and if I could get an audience, if I could get someone to listen to me... I used to pass the time, telling myself wonderful stories about us living in a nice house with lino on the stairs... one of the best ones I've ever told was about the wee folk, the little green men talking to me." (from Richard Joseph's Bestsellers Catherine Cookson was born in Tyne Dock, South Shields, in an industrial region in the northeast of England. Unlike so many leading writers, she started life with many disadvantages. She was born illegitimate. Her mother was poverty-stricken, at times an alcoholic and occasionally violent. Cookson had only the minimum of education, and from the age of thirteen she suffered from hereditary hemorrhage telangiectasia. For many years Cookson believed that she had been abandoned as a baby and that her mother was actually her older sister.

- Dame Catherine (Ann) Cookson, née McMullen; birthdate officially 27.6.1906; also wrote as Catherine Marchant
Bestsellers Catherine Cookson was born in Tyne Dock, South Shields, in an industrial region in the northeast of England. From an early age Cookson was determined to become a writer. She was an avid reader and wrote her first short story, THE WILD IRISH GIRL, when she was eleven, and sent it off to the South Shields Gazette COLOUR BLIND (1953) was a story of a woman who marries a black man. Later their daughter suffers at the hands of classmates and a bitter uncle. The background is realistic, and offers an understanding picture of the British working class. In these early works as in the following books Cookson dealt with such social issues as class tensions and unemployment, among them THE BLACK CANDLE (1989), set in the 19th-century and depicting a clash between two families.

Catherine Cookson dies

Catherine Cookson in 1995
The BBC's Andrew Burroughs: "reckoning with her past inspired a prolific outpouring of books"
One of the most popular romantic authors Dame Catherine Cookson has died just nine days short of her 92nd birthday. Dame Catherine, who was born into poverty, died one of Britain's wealthiest women at her home near Jesmond Dene, Newcastle upon Tyne, at 12.30pm, on Thursday. Novelist and critic Melvyn Bragg says there have been few better storytellers this century The announcement was made by Anthony Shiel, who had been her agent since 1970. He said her family were "desperately upset". "It's very sad. She had been under the weather for the last few months. In a way it was not unexpected," said Mr Shiel. ... "I know she had serious blood problems all her life and had suffered several haemorrhages. Bookshelves full of her books are a common sight "The last time I saw her was last summer and she was in perfectly good spirits. "She was very weak and had lost a lot of weight but she was still laughing, joking and had retained full mental capacity."

SUMMARY Jurisprudence regarding the "free exercise of religion" clause of the U.S. Constitution is in a state of confusion. There has been a series of rapid changes in the standard used by the Supreme Court to determine when a statute impermissibly restricts free exercise. The trend is now towards greater acceptance of government claims about the importance of regulation over religious practices. Here, Cookson challenges the wisdom of this judicial drift, and its false dichotomy between anarchy and a system that respects religious freedom. In its place she offers a new, practical approach to resolving free exercise conflicts that could be used in both federal and state courts. Cookson shows the reader how violations of religious freedom affect the community whose values are at stake.

Welcome to Catherine Cookson.net - Catherine Cookson Biography
English author and writer Dame Catherine Ann Cookson was born on the 27th June 1906 in Tyne Dock, South Shields. Popular by the name Catherine Cookson she became one of the most widely followed novelists in England during the second half of the twentieth century. Her stories revolved around the unprivileged youths of East London. During her childhood Catherine Cookson moved from Tyne Dock, South Shields, to East Jarrow, County Durham. The relics of this place can be seen throughout her most popular novel The Fifteen Streets . She was the illegitimate child of Kate Fawcett an alcoholic mother whom she thought to be her sister during her childhood years. Catherine Cookson was raised by John and Rose McMullen her grandmother and step-grandfather. Cookson’s education was interrupted at the age of thirteen when she renounced her school. Fed-up of domestic violence she moved to a workhouse where she worked in the laundry in South Shields. In 1929 Catherine Cookson shifted to Hastings workhouse to take charge of its laundry. Her new contract allowed her to save some money which she prudently invested in a Victorian house cum Lodge for Gentlemen. In 1940, the thirty-four year old Catherine married Tom Cookson a teacher of East Sussex based in Hastings Grammar School. Catherine went through a series of miscarriages and was diagnosed with telangiectasias a disease characterized by internal and external bleeding and resultant anaemia. To add to her miseries Catherine Cookson suffered from a nervous breakdown but eventually recovered in the next ten years of her life.
