Susan Cooper has been writing for over 30 years. In this time she has written numerous newspaper articles, books for children and adults, screenplays for TV and the cinema and a Broadway play. As a writer she is hard to classify; what is universally accepted is that she is a writer with extraordinary gifts. Born in Burnham, Buckinghamshire, England in May 1935, Susan Cooper attended Slough High School before going up to Oxford University. At Somerville College she read English. During her time at Oxford she was the first woman ever to edit the University newspaper, Cherwell. After graduating with an MA in English, she began work as a reporter on the Atticus Column of London's The Sunday Times (her first boss was Ian Fleming). She later became a feature writer. Her first books were born during this period. Written after work and at weekends, her first was a futuristic novel, Mandrake. And in response to a publishing house competition for a children's adventure story, Over Sea, Under Stone. In 1963 Susan left England to marry an American, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and went "rather nervously" to live in the USA. She wrote two more books for adults: a study of America, Behind the Golden Curtain and a biography of J.B. Priestley, Portrait of An Author.

Return to Susan Fenimore Cooper Notes and Introduction Hugh C. MacDougall
Secretary/Treasurer, James Fenimore Cooper Society "Female Suffrage: A Letter to the Christian Women of America," by Susan Fenimore Cooper, appeared in Harper's New Weekly Magazine , Vol. XLI (JuneNovember, 1870), pp. 438- 446, 594-600. The author is identified only in the Table of Contents, p. v, where she is listed as "Susan F. Cooper." For readers wishing to know the exact location of specific passages, the page breaks from Harper's are identified by a blank line at the end of each page, followed by the original page number at the beginning of the next. The question of "female suffrage" has long been resolved in the United States, andthough sometimes more recentlyin other democratic societies as well. For most people, certainly in the so- called Western world, the right of women to vote on a basis of equality with men seems obvious. A century ago this was not the case, even in America, and it required a long, arduous, and sometimes painful struggle before the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified on August 18, 1920. Why then, take steps to make available through the Gutenberg Project an article arguing AGAINST the right of women to votean article written by a woman?

INTERVIEW WITH SUSAN COOPER
by
RAYMOND H. THOMPSON
CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS
2 JULY 1989
Because she had to fly to California, I missed Susan Cooper on my first trip to the Boston area to interview authors. I had better luck the following year, fortunately, although the weather was predictably hot and humid since it was early July. After the drive up from New York City, her house in Cambridge was a cool and restful oasis. Even so, it seemed a world away from the rocky Cornish coast, the wintry Buckinghamshire village, and the wild Welsh mountains in which is set her series The Dark Is Rising.
Composed of Over Sea, Under Stone (London: Cape, 1965), The Dark Is Rising (New York: Atheneum, 1973), Greenwitch (New York: Atheneum, 1974), The Grey King (New York: Atheneum, 1975), and Silver on the Tree (New York: Atheneum, 1977), it introduces the Grail and several Arthurian characters, the most important of which is Merlin. Though but one element in the broader context of the series, Arthurian tradition provides a dimension that resonates throughout, and it was fascinating to learn how that arose out of the home-sickness she felt for the land of her birth. She told me that her second novel was set in her childhood home of Dorney in Buckinghamshire. I later had a chance to visit the village and to go through Dorney Court and the church in which so many of the events take place. That too was a hot and humid day, but one could still recapture in the mind's eye the wintry scene of Will's struggle against the Dark, so powerfully evoked in her book.

What was the Sign of Water engraved with besides the cross-quartered circle? 'The Dark Is Rising' by Susan Cooper

things of water . 'The ornament in the quiet hands of the long-ship king was shaped as a circle, quartered by a cross. It was wrought of iridescent glass, engraved with serpents and eels and fishes, waves and clouds and things of the sea. It called silently to Will. It was without any question the Sign of Water: the last of the Six Great Signs.'
What jewel was not found on the second Sign of Fire? 'The Dark Is Rising' by Susan Cooper

an agate . On the Sign there was also gold of different colors, beaten into the mandala known by all Old Ones: the cross-quartered circle.
