Robert Coover is leading a literary revolution that eschews pen and paper for keyboard and mouse
by Rebecca Dorr
When Brown University professor and William Faulkner Award-winning author Robert Coover began teaching writing on computers, the World Wide Web did not exist. Heck, computers were altogether different beasts students had to huddle around one enormous desktop model in order to read and discuss stories written by fellow classmates. Even then, Brown and Coover were at the forefront of a literary movement based upon a new medium the computer screen. Now, Coover's classes work in the school's multi-media lab with individual work stations on high-tech machines. But, as writers who continue to experiment with literature on the computer, these students wrestle with the same conceptual constraints that hounded Coover's very first class of electronic writers: How will literature be affected by its move to the computer world? One of the answers to that question involves something most of us are familiar with in someway a new, reader-influenced way of story-reading. Somewhere in our attics or messily shelved rows of books, many of us have at least one copy of

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Robert Cover (July 30, 1943 - July 1986) was a law professor, scholar, and activist, teaching at Yale Law School from 1972 until his untimely death at age 42 in 1986. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1943. He attended Princeton University and Columbia Law School . His most noted works include Justice Accused: Antislavery and the Judicial Process Violence and the Word , and Nomos and Narrative . He lent his strong support to the campaign to divest Yale of apartheid South African financial holdings. He was also interested in Jewish social and legal history, and was translating a renaissance Hebrew text on the law of jurisdiction at the time of his death. Prior to his death from heart problems, many friends and colleagues speculated that, given his extraordinary success at such a young age, he would one day be considered for the Supreme Court In his most famous article on Violence and the Word, he says that "Legal interpretation takes place in a field of pain and death. This is true in several senses. Legal interpretive acts signal and occasion the imposition of violence upon others: A judge articulates her understanding of a text, and as a result, somebody loses his freedom, his property, his children, even his life. Interpretations in law also constitute justifications for violence which has already occurred or which is about to occur. When interpreters have finished their work, they frequently leave behind victims whose lives have been torn apart by these organized, social practices of violence. Neither legal interpretation nor the violence it occasions may be properly understood apart from one another".

Home Library Fairy Tale Companion Coover, Robert (1932– ), distinctive awardwinning American writer, several of whose postmodern fictions for adults rewrite the folk tale as a foundational narrative of Western literature and culture. Born in Iowa, he has been teaching at Brown University for many years and has also lived in Spain, the United Kingdom, and Italy. For Coover, a passionate interpreter of Miguel de Cervantes and Samuel Beckett (see his essay ‘The Last Quixote’), it is through stories that we construct the world itself; thus the writer's vocation is to furnish ‘better fictions with which we can re‐form our notion of things’. Disruption of expectations, parodic repetition, keen pursuit of both metaphor and mundane detail, and unflinching entanglement in and critique of the workings of sexuality and power characterize Coover's unmaking and remaking of social fictions (e.g. religious ritual in The Origin of the Brunists , 1966; games and sports in
