(Robert Edmund Cormier) Search Authors Search Books About Robert Cormier Robert Cormier (pronounced kor-MEER) lived all his life in Leominster, Massachusetts, a small town in the north-central part of the state, where he grew up as part of a close, warm community of French Canadian immigrants. His wife, Connie, also from Leominster, still lives in the house where they raised their three daughters and one son-all adults now. They never saw a reason to leave. "There are lots of untold stories right here on Main Street," Cormier once said. A newspaper reporter and columnist for 30 years (working for the Worcester Telegram and Gazette and the Fitchburg Sentinel), Cormier was often inspired by news stories. What makes his works unique is his ability to make evil behavior understandable, though, of course, still evil. "I'm very much interested in intimidation," he told an interviewer from School Library Journal. "And the way people manipulate other people. And the obvious abuse of authority." All of these themes are evident in his young adult classic and best-known book, The Chocolate War. A 15-year-old fan of his said, "You always write from inside the person." Cormier traveled the world, from Australia (where he felt particularly thrilled by putting his hand in the Indian Ocean) and New Zealand to most of the countries in Europe, speaking at schools, colleges, and universities and to teacher and librarian associations. He visited nearly every state in the nation. While Cormier loved to travel, he said many times that he also loved returning to his home in Leominster.

Cormier's reputation as a fine writer of Young Adult fiction is widely acknowledged. Beyond that, he deserves recognition as a major writer of the past 25 years, period. His omission from such books as The Oxford Companion to American Literature is heinous.
You've lived the whole of your life in Leominster, and have been in the same house for over 40 years. Why? I think I like that sense of security and that sense ofit sounds like a clichebut roots. When I was young growing up, I thought that to be a writer I had to travel the world, and have all these experiences. Then at some point... I think it goes back to the adventures of Tom Sawyer... that was the first book I really ever owned that wasn't a text book... my godmother gave it to me when I was 11 or 12. Tom Sawyer with his adventures, painting the fence... I sorta realised that there was drama right there in my own neighbourhood. I've thought about that since. At the time it occurred it wasn't a lightning bolt, but I've always been conscious of not having to travel that far. The legends I heard when I was a child, the strikes at the shops were very dramatic to me. Then I'd read

Angela Cunningham Annotated Bibliography I have chosen to annotate works by and about Robert Cormier because he is well known as on of the best writers of young adult literature in the history of this genre. I have read two of his books, and will now forever be a fan of his work. Honesty, though often criticized in todays world, is a very valuable trait, and one that young adults deserve in their literature. As he says in the interview with Judith Bugniazet, Theres a theme that runs through my books, this feeling that each person, no matter his or her age, should have their own dignity. I started by annotating every novel that he has written. Then I moved on to an article that he wrote about writing the sequel to The Chocolate War , appropriately titled Beyond the Chocolate War . I then put in an interesting article about his views on censorship, titled A Book Is Not a House. This article is an excellent response to censorship, and one he certainly has the privilege to write since he is a huge target for book banning. One of the wonderful things about Robert Cormier is his open and friendly attitude towards the world. Although he is often viewed as a pessimist, he is incredibly open to his fans and any other inquiring minds. This is on of the reasons why I found the

Robert Cormier Robert Cormier was born in 1925 in French Hill, a French-Canadian neighborhood of Leominster, Massachusetts, and has lived in Leominster all his life. The second of eight children, Robert enjoyed a happy childhood in the nest of his close-knit family and community. His family provided him a haven from the outer world. Cormier didn't fare well in the streets of his neighborhood, where ballplaying ability counted for more than his love of books. He attended St. Celia's Parochial Grammar School, where some of the nuns gave him a terrible time. When he was in eighth grade, he watched in horror from his classroom window as his own house caught fire and burned. His teacher refused to let him go to see if his family was safe until he had said the requisite prayers. This incident enraged him for years afterward.
One of the nuns, however, made a remark that changed the way he thought of himself. His seventh-grade teacher read one of his poems and told him that he was a writer. He believed her, and continued to think of himself as one. Later, a teacher at Fitchburg State College was so impressed with one of Cormier's stories that she submitted it to a magazine; it became his first published work.
