23. Wired Scenarios: - Reverse Time Capsule Douglas Coupland
Looking at what would be the best artifacts to send back to the people of 1975.
http://www.wirednews.com/wired/scenarios/capsule.html
Perhaps you've read newspaper reports regarding the exhumation of time capsules from other eras, and perhaps you've noticed how oddly irrelevant their contents seem to the modern eye: a poem by the mayor's wife; fragments of shrapnel from a forgotten war; a toy train ... sometimes we don't even bother to finish the story. But what if we were to receive a time capsule not from the past, but from the future - would we pay more attention? One suspects so. In this spirit, Wired has created a reverse time capsule, not a capsule directed to the future, but rather to the citizens of 1975. What artifacts might surprise them most about the direction taken by the next 20 years? To all you youngsters, sure, you grew up with all the things shown here, but there was a time when music meant (shudder) vinyl, when there were no VCRs, when recycling, decaf coffee, and bottled water were all jokes ... a time when (get this) every single consumer item on Earth didn't have bar codes, and when personal computers were a silly dream. No, we're not talking about the Jazz Age or the French Revolution. We're talking about a mere two decades ago, when all of the objects shown on this page were pretty well unthinkable. Time flies when you're having a culture. Herewith, a quick compendium of "now" looked at through the lens of the past.

'Miss Wyoming' by Douglas Coupland January 25, 2000
Web posted at: 11:45 a.m. EST (1645 GMT) (CNN) Douglas Coupland says "Miss Wyoming" is different from his previous works because "I just learned I didn't need notepads anymore. I could invent what I needed. It was written from beginning to end, no notes at all." This text contains profanity that may be offensive to some readers. CHAPTER ONE Susan Colgate sat with her agent, Adam Norwitz, on the rocky outdoor patio of the Ivy restaurant at the edge of Beverly Hills. Susan was slightly chilly and kept a fawn-colored cashmere sweater wrapped around her shoulders as she snuck bread crumbs to the birds darting about the ground. Her face was flawlessly made up and her hair was cut in the style of the era. She was a woman on a magazine cover, gazing out at the checkout-stand shopper, smiling, but locked in time and space, away from the real world of squalling babies, bank cards and casual shoplifting. ALSO
  • Generation Next: Coupland's back with 'Miss Wyoming' Susan and Adam were looking at two men across the busy restaurant. Adam was saying to Susan, "You see that guy on the left? That's 'Jerr-Bear' Rogers, snack dealer to the stars and the human equivalent of an unflushed toilet." "Adam!"

      Microserfs:Transhumanity
"Microserfs" started out as an acclaimed short story in Wired about the life of young coders at Microsoft. The full story including this excerpt is now a novel, just released by HarperCollins. Stay tuned for the upcoming Fox TV show.

By Douglas Coupland The cover story for the January 1994 issue of Wired spun the tale of seven Microsoft employees - Todd, Bug, Abe, Michael, Karla, Susan, and the narrator, Daniel - searching for purpose while grinding code for the all-knowing Bill. That story has become the first chapter of Coupland's recently released book, Microserfs (HarperCollins). In this excerpt, the original crew has grown in number and found the courage to leave the mother ship, move to Silicon Valley, and pursue the ultimate goal: starting up a company and building a product of their own creation. In 18 months of coding madness, they created Oop!, a cross between Legos and an erector set, with the smarts of AutoCAD built in. Michael, who in the first installment had left Seattle on a secret mission for Bill in Cupertino, became the catalyst for the company. Once he tasted Silicon Valley and realized its potential, he never came back. Michael asked the original Microserfs to come down and help him form Interiority Co.; they were joined by a number of new recruits, among them Ethan, a perpetually dandruff-laden venture capitalist (who later contracted skin cancer), and Dusty, a female bodybuilder and accomplished coder (whom Todd found at Gold's Gym and later got pregnant).

that-guy's Full Review: Coupland, Douglas Brilliant Bambification of the Poverty Jet Set who due to Historical underdosing and 101-ism submit to conversational slumming. This gibberish sentence brought to you by Douglas Coupland's genius for jargon: typified by the universal use of the term Generation X. Coupland writes, "It doesn't have a namean X generationpurposefully hiding itself." (another ex. Bambification: The mental conversion of flesh and blood living creatures into cartoon characters possessing bourgeois Judeo-Christian attitudes and morals).
The novel, subtitled Tales for an Accelerated Culture, accelerates too, moving from one incident to another, from one story inside another, endlessly tracking the hyper-culture drenched with information, so much of which is meaningless. But it's funny. The sort of ironic, too cool funny that I'm sure Coupland has a term for.

    35. Douglas Coupland
An interview by Alexander Laurence with a discussion about the author s book, Miss Wyoming .
    http://www.freewilliamsburg.com/still_fresh/coupland.html
I met Douglas in New York City recently, early in 2000. He was staying in a hotel in the upper 50s. I called him on the phone and he told that he was wearing a bozo suit and he would be easy to recognized. I had interviewed him before and was ready to be subverted by Coupland. When I interviewed him more than five years ago, he didn't really answer any of my questions. So this time I just had a conversation with him, and hopefully we would talk about his new book, Miss Wyoming , which I liked.
I didn't really want to talk about Gen X or Bill Gates. So
I went in with an open mind. And being the first real interview I have done for FreeWilliamsburg, I wanted it to be timely and varied. Hopefully we got to vent some hostility, or maybe just let out our frustrations. Maybe we were just wondering why we were talking to each other.
Thanks to Suzanne Williams for setting up this interview AL: How did you celebrate the year 2000, the Millennium?

Generation Next: Coupland's back with 'Miss Wyoming'
    January 25, 2000
Web posted at: 9:14 a.m. EST (1414 GMT) By Jamie Allen CNN Interactive Senior Writer (CNN) It's probably not symbolic in any way. But it's worth noting that Douglas Coupland, the author who has been called "the voice of his generation," has laryngitis. He's talking on the phone in his Washington D.C. hotel room between sips of a Diet Coke, his voice a muddied rasp. The subject of discussion: how he got into writing in his mid-20s. "I was living-working in Tokyo," Coupland says, "and I sent someone a postcard and she put it up on a fridge in Vancouver. The editor of a local city magazine read it and said, 'Hey, this guy can write.' Two days later I was down in Beverly Hills investigating a guy that was doing art swindles, and it was fun and easy." A few years later, Coupland decided he was ready for a life of writing fiction. The moment is particularly Coupland-esque, a mix of pop-culture references and messages from above.

A Couple of Hyped Guys Sitting Around Talking
Two icons of a mediated generation discuss celebrity, technology, and solitude as the ultimate radical act.

By John Battelle Since the almost concurrent 1991 releases of their generationally defining works, Slacker and Generation X, director Richard Linklater and author Douglas Coupland have followed roughly similar career cycles. Rich's Dazed and Confused and Doug's Shampoo Planet and Life after God engendered little of the marketing feeding frenzy of their predecessors, but neither Rich nor Doug could entirely escape being influenced by it. Their upcoming works - Doug's novel, based on "Microserfs" (which first appeared in these pages last January), and Rich's film, Before Sunrise, about two strangers who meet while traveling in Europe - will both début next year. Doug and Rich seem so numb to the hype around their generational voices that discussing even the deconstruction of that myth is taxing for them. If others glom onto their thoughts, they say, so be it. Fine. Hollywood and New York, the film and publishing worlds, wooed them both after their first works came out, and while each had the chance to sport Armani suits and live in the land of fabulous parties, neither bit. Doug stayed in Vancouver; Rich stuck to Austin. Doug never sold his books to Hollywood, and Rich has yet to direct a Terminator spinoff.
