William Cowper William Cowper (pronounced Couper) was born at Great Berkhampstead, Hertfordshire, the son of a vicar, and was educated at Westminster School. He studied at the Inner Temple and was called to the bar in 1754, but never practised. During his twenties he suffered severly from depression and on one occasion attempted suicide. In 1765 he went to live with a retired clergyman, Morley Unwin, and his family in Huntingdon, and following the latter's death two years later, moved with his widow, Mary, and children to Olney in Buckinghamshire. Afflicted by mental illness for most of his life, Cowper collapsed completely after her death in 1794. Influenced by the Calvinist pastor John Newton, Cowper wrote a number of well-known hymns but his best work was produced in his later years when he wrote John Gilpin The Solitude of Alexander Selkirk Boadicea The Poplar Field On the Loss of the Royal George and the sonnet, To Mrs. Unwin . His final poem, The Castaway , was written shortly before his death. Cowper wrote with simplicity and humanity and his poetry contains some beautiful imagery. One of the most popular poets of his time, Cowper changed the direction of 18th century nature poetry by writing of everyday life and scenes of the English countryside. In many ways, he was one of the forerunners of Romantic poetry Samuel Taylor Coleridge called him "the best modern poet", whilst William Wordsworth particularly admired his poem Yardley-Oak . He was a nephew of the poet Judith Madan While Cowper found refuge in a fervent evangelical Christianity , the inspiration behind his much-loved hymns, he often experienced doubt and feared that he was doomed to eternal damnation . Print William Cowper The first child of Reverend John Cowper and Ann Donne Cowper, Willam Cowper was born on November 15, 1731, in Berkhampstead, Herefordshire, England. The poet's mother died when he was six and Cowper was sent to Dr. Pittman's boarding school, where he was routinely bullied. In 1748, he enrolled in the Middle Temple in order to pursue a law degree. Shortly thereafter, he fell in love with Theodora Cowper, a cousin. Her father did not approve, and their relationship ended in 1755. Cowper wrote a sequence of poems, Delia , chronicling this affair but the book was not published until 1825. In 1763, through family connections, he accepted a clerkship of the journals in the House of Lords. A rival faction, however, challenged his appointment and the ordeal caused Cowper to enter Nathaniel Cotton's Collegium Insanorum at St. Albans. While there he converted to Evangelicalism. In 1765, he moved to Huntingdon and took a room with the Rev. Morley Unwin and his wife Mary. Unwin died of a riding accident in 1767 and Cowper and Mary Unwin moved together to the town of Olney in 1768. They were not separated until her death in 1796. While at Olney, Cowper became close friends with the Evangelical clergyman John Newton; together they co-authored the
