Photograph by Walker Evans. Fine in a very good, spine-faded dustwrapper with a couple of internally repaired short tears. Inscribed by the poet: "For Tom Smith with best wishes, Hart Crane." This edition was extensively revised and corrected following the first privately printed edition of 275 copies published by the Black Sun Press in Paris three months earlier. Smith was the editor-in-chief for the publisher Horace Liveright to whom, some evidence exists, Crane turned to when he was short on funds. Smith picked a succession of best sellers for Liveright beginning with Hendrick Van Loon's The Story of Mankind (1921). Equally important, he selected up-and-coming writers Eugene O'Neill ( Gold: A Play in Four Acts ), Ernest Hemingway ( In OurTime ), William Faulkner ( Soldier's Pay ), T.S. Hart Crane Biography
Poet
Name at birth: Harold Hart Crane Bright, volatile, short-lived and hard-drinking, Crane was in some ways an archetype of the Roaring Twenties author. Crane is best known for The Bridge (1930), an epic vision of American life with the Brooklyn Bridge as a central image. Crane is often compared to Walt Whitman , both for his modern American sensibilities and for the homoerotic imagery some find in his work. In sheer style Crane also resembled T.S. Eliot , whom he admired. Crane committed suicide by leaping from the S.S. Orizaba in 1932. Extra credit : Crane was no relation to Stephen Crane, author of The Red Badge of Courage Hart Crane joins actress Natalie Wood in our loop Death By Yacht Other 20th-century poets include Allen Ginsberg E.E. Apparently Hart Crane's mother either gave away or sold some of his bookplates shortly after his death to the bookseller Samuel Loveman, thus resulting in occasional "association copies" surfacing. However, all of the books that we have seen signed by him were either inscribed to a specific individual, or in the case of a simple signature (with the exception of the signed edition of The Bridge only 50 copies), were from his personal library. Hart Crane was a gifted poet. Born in Garrettsville, Ohio into a dysfunctional family, he worked in a printshop, wrote advertising copy, became a riveter in a shipyard, and a reporter on the Cleveland Plain Dealer. In his early 30s, he committed suicide by jumping into the Gulf of Mexico from a steamer.

Crane, Hart
From New World Encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search Previous (Harry Vardon) Next (Harthacanute) Taken by Walker Evans in 1930. Harold Hart Crane (July 21, 1899 – April 27, 1932) was an American poet who wrote during the period of literary Modernism . Crane is one of the most challenging poets in all of American literature, as well as one of the most difficult to categorize. Crane's style is known for being incredibly complex and archaic; he intentionally wrote in a vocabulary drawn from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, in order to prove that the poetry of the distant past was still applicable in the present day. In part, Crane's unusual and difficult style was a result of the fact that he had no formal education in literature; he was a voracious reader and autodidact, becoming particularly fond of and inspired by the Elizabethan poets such as Christopher Marlowe William Shakespeare , and John Donne , as well as by the seminal American poet of the nineteenth century, Walt Whitman . Although Crane was also inspired by T.S. Eliot

Crane's poetry has been a touchstone for me, and remains central to a fully imaginative understanding of American literature.
Book Description
This edition features a new introduction by Harold Bloom as a centenary tribute to the visionary of White Buildings (1926) and The Bridge (1930). Hart Crane, prodigiously gifted and tragically doom-eager, was the American peer of Shelley, Rimbaud, and Lorca. Born in Garrettsville, Ohio, on July 21, 1899, Crane died at sea on April 27, 1932, an apparent suicide. A born poet, totally devoted to his art, Crane suffered his warring parents as well as long periods of a hand-to-mouth existence. He suffered also from his honesty as a homosexual poet and lover during a period in American life unsympathetic to his sexual orientation. Despite much... Hart Crane and the Homosexual Text
Thomas E. Yingling
Apr 1990 Paperback Book Description "Canonized for being insufficiently American although he took America as his subject, chastised for obscurity by readers who would not allow or would not read homosexual meanings, Crane embodies many understandings of America, and of the predicament of the gay writer."
