The Red Badge of Courage
by Stephen Crane Terms Contents CHAPTER I. CHAPTER II. ... CHAPTER XXIV. CHAPTER I.
HE cold passed reluctantly from the earth, and the retiring fogs revealed an army stretched out on the hills, resting. As the landscape changed from brown to green, the army awak- ened, and began to tremble with eagerness at the noise of rumors. It cast its eyes upon the roads, which were growing from long troughs of liquid mud to proper thoroughfares. A river, amber- tinted in the shadow of its banks, purled at the army's feet; and at night, when the stream had become of a sorrowful blackness, one could see across it the red, eyelike gleam of hostile camp- fires set in the low brows of distant hills. Once a certain tall soldier developed virtues and went resolutely to wash a shirt. He came flying back from a brook waving his garment bannerlike. He was swelled with a tale he had heard from a reliable friend, who had heard it from a truthful cavalryman, who had heard it from his trustworthy brother, one of the order- lies at division headquarters. He adopted the important air of a herald in red and gold. "We're goin' t' move t' morrahsure," he said pompously to a group in the company street. "We're goin' 'way up the river, cut across, an' come around in behint 'em." To his attentive audience he drew a loud and elaborate plan of a very brilliant campaign. When he had finished, the blue-clothed men scattered into small arguing groups between the rows of squat brown huts. A negro teamster who had been dancing upon a cracker box with the hilarious encouragement of twoscore soldiers was deserted. He sat mournfully down. Smoke drifted lazily from a multitude of quaint chim- neys.

    Biography of Stephen Crane (1871-1900)
Study Guides and Essays by Stephen Crane Maggie: A Girl of the Streets and Other Stories The Red Badge of Courage Born in November 1871 in Newark, New Jersey, Stephen Crane was the youngest of fourteen children. The Crane family moved to Port Jervis, New York, where Crane first began his education. His father, a strict Methodist minister, died in 1880, leaving his devout, strong mother to raise the rest of the family. Mary H. P. Crane moved her family back to New Jersey, where they lived in Asbury Park. Mrs. Crane herself was an active writer who contributed to various Methodist papers. Crane attended a Methodist boarding school for two years from 1885 to 1887. Later, he attended Claverack College and the Hudson River Institute. Ultimately, Crane spent less than two years in college. At Syracuse University, he excelled in baseball and enjoyed a much more successful social life than an academic life. During his brief stint at college, Crane came into contact with Hamlin Garland, an author whose style would influence Crane’s own works. While Crane was in college, his mother passed away; he dropped out and moved to New York City. In this urban setting, he worked as a freelance writer and eventually completed his first novel

Crane's first novel is the tale of a pretty young slum girl driven to brutal excesses by poverty and loneliness. It was considered so sexually frank and realistic, that the book had to be privately printed at first. It was eventually hailed as the first genuine expression of Naturalism in American letters and established its creator as the American apostle of an artistic revolution which was to alter the shape and destiny of civilization itself.

The Black Riders and Other Lines and War is Kind , was unconventional for the time in that it was written in free verse without rhyme, meter, or even titles for individual works. They are typically short in length and although several poems, such as "Do not weep, maiden, for war is kind", use stanzas and refrains, most do not. Crane also differed from his peers and poets of later generations in that his work contains allegory, dialectic and narrative situations. - Excerpted from Wikipedia

Crane, Stephen
From New World Encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search Previous (Stephen Bantu Biko) Next (Stephen Foster) Stephen Crane Stephen Crane (November 1, 1871 - June 5, 1900) was an American novelist, poet, and journalist who is now considered to be one of the most important writers in the vein of American realism . In fiction, Crane pioneered a naturalistic and unsentimental style of writing that was strongly influenced by Crane's experiences as a journalist. Crane's most well-known work, The Red Badge of Courage, is almost universally considered to be the first great novel of the American Civil War , due in part to its ability to describe the experience of warfare in vivid, psychological detail. Crane's other major novel, Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, was less popular in its time, but it too is now esteemed as one of the most vivid portrayals of lower-class life in nineteenth century Manhattan in all of American literature. Crane's focus on realistic stories, which often ended tragically and without a clear sense of resolution, were contrary to the Romantic tastes of his times, and it would not be until the next generation of American realists, such as Theodore Dreiser and Frank Norris , that Crane's immense influence on the development of American literature would become fully apparent. In addition to his fiction, Crane was also the author of some of the most unusual poetry in all of nineteenth century English literature. Written in free verse and focusing on paradoxical, almost dream-like images, Crane's poetry endures as one of the most unique contributions to the American canon. On the whole, Crane, despite his tragically short life and small overall output, is one of the most important American writers of the late nineteenth century.
