SUNDAY REVIEW
The San Francisco Chronicle
28 September 1986 From the Language Poets ROBERT CREELEY IN THE AMERICAN TREE
Edited by Ron Silliman
National Poetry Foundation, University of Maine at Orono
628 pages Whatever poetry may prove to be at last, the very word (from the Greek poiein , "to make") determines a made thing, a construct, a literal system of words. We are, of course, far more likely to think of a poem as a pleasing sentiment, a lyric impulse, an expression of feeling that can engage the reader or listener in some intensive manner. But, whatever our disposition, it is well to remember that there is a diversity of "poetries" in our world. As Ron Silliman, the articulate and resourceful editor of "In the American Tree," puts it in his introduction to this significant anthology: "The more pertinent questions are what is the community being addressed in the writing, how does the writing participate in the constitution of this audience, and is it effective in doing so." The Language Poets - a qualification with which all seem uneasy and which Jackson Mac Low, an elder poet of this company, discusses in this book with provocative clarity - have been a vivid presence on both coasts for some years. Particularly in San Francisco, they have served to engage active political dispositions as to what is the requisite "nature of poetry" and who or what significantly informs it.

9. A Form Of Women By Robert Creeley
Creeley s poem at Boppin a Riff.
http://www.boppin.com/poets/creeley.htm

    Robert Creeley
    A Form of Women
    I have come far enough
from where I was not before
    to have seen the things
looking in at me from through the open door
    and have walked tonight
    by myself
    to see the moonlight
and see it as trees and shapes more fearful because I feared what I did not know but have wanted to know. My face is my own, I thought. But you have seen it turn into a thousand years. I watched you cry. I could not touch you. I wanted very much to touch you but could not. If it is dark when this is given to you, have care for its content when the moon shines. My face is my own. My hands are my own. My mouth is my own but I am not. Moon, moon, when you leave me alone all the darkness is an utter blackness, a pit of fear, a stench, hands unreasonable never to touch.

Customer Reviews
an innovator Using simple phrases and a lot of white space, Robert Creeley is a innovator of modern verse that suffuses mystery into the mundune. He is straightforward, spare, uses very few metaphors. He is an absolute master of measure, using the sound of the words and the pauses in between to create beautiful, haunting verse. It is difficult to be cerebral while reading his work, the poetry never explains or describe but is made to be experienced as a bodily phenomenon. It engages a quieter, deeper more subtle appreciation challenging for a modern readership used to instant gratifications. Robert Creeley will one your eyes Out of all of my books it is the only one that for over 15 years I have read something from everyday.
