The Lost Zoo List Price:
Description
Poems explain why animals such as the Wakeupworld, the Squilililigee, the Sleepamitemore, and the Treasuretit did not get onto Noah's Ark, and are therefore not seen in any zoo today.

A Different Version of Noah's Ark Christopher Cat tells Countee Cullen the story that was passed down from generation to generation in his family of the animals which were lost in the Genesis flood that didn't make it onto Noah's ark. There was an animal that opened up a different colored eye for every hour of the day. There was an animal that could find any lost thing. And there was even a walking snake. Each animal had a different excuse for "missing the boat". Some slept through the loading. Others thought they were important enough to not get left behind. And still others were too busy to make it aboard. Cullen's story starts out interestingly enough. I especially like his inclusion of Christopher Cat as a source of the oral history of these extinct animals. Cullen certainly had quite an original idea for his book. However, I quickly lost interest when he switched from prose and short poetry to long poetry. The longer the poems got, the less interesting they became. I have difficulty imagining today's child grasping the more advanced English that he uses in his storytelling. I suppose that's why the librarian had to fetch this book out of storage for me when I requested it.

Cullen, Countee (1903-1946) Countee Cullen, an African-American poet of the Harlem Renaissance, was heralded as the "poet laureate" of the period. Cullen's birthplace is difficult to ascertain but is generally agreed to have been Louisville, Kentucky. Countee Leroy Porter (the name he used until 1920) was born on May 30, 1903, and was raised by his grandmother, Mrs. Porter, who brought him to New York when he was nine. On her death, the orphaned Cullen seems to have been adopted (around 1918) by the pastor Frederick A. Cullen of Salem Methodist Episcopal Church in Harlem. Cullen was educated at the prestigious DeWitt Clinton High School (1922), graduated Phi Beta Kappa from New York University (1925), and completed an M.A. in literature from Harvard (1926). About Cullen, Countee Cullen Elementary School
Countee Cullen (1903 - 1946): poet. He was one of the leading figures in the Harlem Renaissance. Born Countee Porter in Baltimore, he was orphaned at an early age and adopted by the Reverend Frederick Cullen, pastor of New York's Salem Methodist Church. At New York University, Cullen won Phi Beta Kappa honors and was awarded the Witter Bynner Poetry Prize. In 1925, while still a student at NYU, Cullen completed "Color," a volume of poetry which received the Harmon Foundation's first gold medal for literature two years later. In 1926 he earned his MA at Harvard and a year later finished both "The Ballad of the Brown Girl" and "Copper Sun." This was followed in 1929 by "The Black Christ," written during a two-year sojourn in France on a Guggenheim Fellowship. Upon his return to New York City, he began teaching in the public schools and continuing to write, which he did until his death. Do you have some historical information about this school?

source: The American Academy of Poets "... in spite of myself, I find that I am actuated by a strong sense of race consciousness. This grows upon me." - CC Cullen was the leading writer of the Harlem Renaissance, a period of remarkable literary achievement by African-American writers in New York City during the 1920s. A dedicated craftsman, Cullen was criticized for being conventional, for using the British romantic poets as his models, and for insisting that poetry in general should be free of racial and political matters. But in his finest poem, "Heritage," he shows his relationship to Africa. "Yet Do I Marvel" I doubt not God is good, well-meaning, kind,
And did He stoop to quibble could tell why
