    If
If freckles were lovely, and day was night,
And measles were nice and a lie warn't a lie,
      Life would be delight,
      But things couldn't go right
For in such a sad plight
      I wouldn't be I
If earth was heaven and now was hence,
And past was present, and false was true,
      There might be some sense
      But I'd be in suspense
      For on such a pretense
      You wouldn't be you.
If fear was plucky, and globes were square,
And dirt was cleanly and tears were glee
      Things would seem fair,
      Yet they'd all despair,
      For if here was there
      We wouldn't be we.
      e.e. cummings
    The Eagle
It was one of those clear, sharp.mustless days
That summer and man delight in.
Never had Heaven seemed quite so high,
Never had earth seemed quite so green,
Never had the world seemed quite so clean
      Or sky so nigh.
And I heard the Deity's voice in
      The sun's warm rays,
And the white cloud's intricate maze,
And the blue sky's beautiful sheen.
I looked to the heavens and saw him there,
      A black speck downward drifting,
Nearer and nearer he steadily sailed

84. Decapitalization Of E. E. Cummings
By Norman Friedman, who was scolded by the poet s widow for spelling his name in the decapitalized mode.

NOT "e. e. cummings"
by Norman Friedman
Spring
It may at first seem of little import, but for a poet who paid such exacting attention to typography, it must be said once and for all that his name should be written and printed with the usual capital letters in their usual places: "E. E. Cummings.'' Let us dispose, first of all, of the usual reaction when his name is mentioned in conversation: "Oh, isn't he the poet who never uses capitals?" Even a casual look at his poems shows that of course he uses capitals—he uses them frequently, albeit not always conventionally. The same goes for spacing, word and line breaks, parentheses, and punctuation, not to mention grammar and syntax. What probably accounts for the common misperception that he is a lowercase poet is his usual printing of "I" as "i." Interestingly, he wrote in a letter to his mother, September 3, 1925 ( Selected Letters , F. W. Dupee and George Stade, eds., 1969, pp. 108-9): "I am a small eye poet." Notice that he capitalizes the first-person singular, distinguishing between the writer of the letter and the writer of the poetry. And in his letters he most frequently used the uppercase form, with his signature at the bottom in caps, thus: This comes from a letter to me dated January 13, 1949.

Alan Cumming X-Men 2 Interviewed by Anne Smith Alan Cumming may be the campest thing to come out of Scotland since the Bay City Rollers. His varied CV includes roles in "Spice World: The Movie", " GoldenEye ", " Spy Kids ", and " Josie and the Pussycats ". Now he's mutated into Nightcrawler on "X-Men 2". This film has a lot more depth compared to other comic book movies... The thing about Bryan Singer is that he is very passionate about the characters. What I liked about the script was that the characters are all very well defined. And the fact that they are outcasts and, in addition to their powers, are struggling to varying degrees with what it feels like to be prejudiced against. So that is why I think it works and why it has worked for a long, long time. It is not hard to feel like an outsider. I think we have all felt like that at one time or another. I think the X-Men comics came at the time of the civil rights movement starting in America. I hadn't read any of the comics, and when I read the script I was a bit sniffy about it. But I was surprised, because you don't expect to get characters of this depth in any Hollywood film, let alone a comic book superhero one.

Review of Up Close and Alone.

BURTON CUMMINGS Up Close and Alone (MCA Canada)
Burton Cummings has long been considered by many to be one of rock's finest piano players. Twenty-one years after the breakup of The Guess Who, Cummings has just released his first live album as a solo artist. Up Close and Alone is a solo album in the truest sense. Its just Burton and his piano, digitally recorded over two nights last December at Toronto's Glenn Gould Theatre. The sound quality on the disc is crystalline. It sounds like you're in the same room with him. Songs like "Share the Land" and "No Sugar Tonight / New Mother Nature" really benefit from the new stripped down arrangements. The ballads on the disc, such as "Sour Suite", "Stand Tall", and the beautiful "Dream of a Child" are simply exquisite. Cummings shows his dry sense of humor during the show too. Don't miss his impression of Gordon Lightfoot doing Rod's Stewart's "Maggie May". One of the coolest things about this CD is the booklet. Burton provided insightful liner notes for each song. The highlights, though, are the photos. Obviously taken from family albums, you get shots of Burton as a baby, through his early childhood and teen years, photos with his first bands, pictures with The Guess Who, and lots more. This CD is essential for Cummings fans, and Guess Who fans alike.
