A rare first edition of Darwin's "On the Origin of Species" was sold on November 24, 2009 at Christie's Auction House, in London, for 103,250 pounds (about $172,500 USD). The thing about this rare edition is that it was discovered sitting on the toilet bookshelf of a house in Oxford, England. Recent addition - Darwin's burial: Perhaps you have heard that Charles Darwin was buried next to Sir Isaac Newton. This is not true! Find out the exact location of his burial site by CLICKING HERE. Charles Darwin News Update: DATELINE: December 14, 2009 - Doctor John Hayman, associate professor at Monash Univerity in Melbourne, suggests that Charles Darwin was suffering from an inherited disorder known as "cyclical vomiting syndrome". Hayman writes in the British Medical Journal that cyclical vomiting syndrome mainly affects children but can appear for the first time in adulthood. "The syndrome is related to migraine but is linked to genetic abnormalities. Classic symptoms of cyclical vomiting syndrome include severe sickness, headaches, anxiety and intense abdominal pain. Many patients also suffer from eczema and recurrent skin infections." This is pretty much an exact list of the symptoms Darwin suffered from most of his life.

    Naturalist, 1809 -1882
Charles Robert Darwin was born on February 12, 1809 in Shrewsbury, England. Darwin was born on the same day as Abraham Lincoln . He was the fifth child and second son of Robert Waring Darwin and Susannah Wedgwood. Darwin was the British naturalist who became famous for his theories of evolution and natural selection. Like several scientists before him, Darwin believed all the life on earth evolved (developed gradually) over millions of years from a few common ancestors.

English naturalist who revolutionized biology with his theory of evolution through natural selection . Between 1831 and 1836 the young Darwin sailed around the world onboard HMS Beagle . In the course of this he made many geological observations favorable to Lyell's uniformitarian geology, devised a theory to account for the structure of coral islands, and was impressed by the facts of the geographical distribution of plants and animals. He became convinced that species were not fixed categories as was commonly supposed but were capable of variation, though he was not until he read Essay on the Principle of Population by Thomas Malthus that he discovered a mechanism whereby ecologically favored varieties might form the basis for new distinct species.
Darwin published nothing for 20 years until, on learning of Alfred Wallace 's independent discovery of the same theory, he collaborated with the younger man in a short Linnean-Society paper. The next year (1859) the theory was set before a wider public in his Origin of Species . The rest of his life was spent in further research in defense of his theory, though he always avoided entering the popular controversies surrounding his work and left it to others to debate the supposed consequences of "Darwinism."

The following is the play program for the play "Darwin Remembers", written by Floyd Sandford. With the assistance of a grant from Humanities Iowa and the National Endowment for the Humanities, the play was performed, at five different venues in Eastern Iowa from March to September 2000. In the productions the role of Charles Darwin was acted by Mr. Sandford. The play, a living history reenactment for one actor, included a 6-minute recreation of the historic debate at Oxford in June 1860 between Bishop Samuel Wilberforce and the biologist Thomas Huxley, with the actor portraying both roles. The first production, in two acts and lasting two hours, was at the Dows Fine Arts Theatre on the campus of Coe College on the evening of April 20, 2000, an d was supported by a grant from Humanities Iowa and the National Endowment for the Humanities. In 2006 the play was shortened. It is now performed in one act with no intermission and lasts 70-75 minutes. To date, performances have been given at colleges, universities, natural history museums, churches, and humanist societies

    Charles Darwin
Darwin is the first of the evolutionary biologists, the originator of the concept of natural selection. His principal works, The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection (1859) and The Descent of Man (1871) marked a new epoch. His works were violently attacked and energetically defended, then; and, it seems, yet today. Charles Robert Darwin was born at Shrewsbury. His father was a doctor and his mother was the daughter of Josiah Wedgwood. Darwin first studied medicine at Edinburgh. Will as they might, it soon became clear to the family, and particularly to young Charles, that he was not cut out for a medical career; he was transferred to Cambridge (Christ's Church, 1828), there to train for the ministry. While at Cambridge, Darwin befriended a biology professor (John Stevens Henslow, 1796-1861) and his interest in zoology and geography grew. Eventually, Darwin came under the eye of a geology professor, Adam Sedgwick (1785-1873). Just after a field trip to Wales with Sedgwick during which Darwin was to learn much from "Sedgewick's on-the-spot tutorials" and was to develop "intellectual muscle as he burnt off the flab" he was to learn, that, through the efforts of Professor Henslow, that he had secured an invitation to go aboard the

D uring these two years[ ] I was led to think much about religion. Whilst on board the Beagle But I was very unwilling to give up my belief; I feel sure of this for I can well remember often and often inventing day-dreams of old letters between distinguished Romans and manuscripts being discovered at Pompeji or elsewhere which confirmed in the most striking manner all that was written in the Gospels. But I found it more and more difficult, with free scope given to my imagination, to invent evidence which would suffice to convince me. Thus disbelief crept over me at very slow rate, but was at last complete. The rate was so slow that I felt no distress, and have never since doubted even for a single second that my conclusion was correct. I can indeed hardly see how anyone ought to wish Christianity to be true; for if so the plain language of the text seems to show that the men who do not believe, and this would include my Father, Brother and almost all of my friends, will be everlasting punished. And this is a damnable doctrine[ Although I did not think much about the existence of a personal God until a considerably later period of my life, I will here give the vague conclusions to which I have been driven. The old argument of design in nature, as given by Paley, which formerly seemed to me so conclusive, fails, now that the law of natural selection has been discovered. We can no longer argue that, for instance, the beautiful hinge of a bivalve shell must have been made by an intelligent being, like the hinge of a door by man. There seems to be no more design in the variability of organic beings and in the action of natural selection, than in the course the wind blows. Everything in nature is the result of fixed laws. But I have discussed this subject at the end of my book on the
