DARWIN, Charles Robert (1809-82), British scientist, who laid the foundation of modern evolutionary theory with his concept of the development of all forms of life through the slow-working process of natural selection. His work was a major influence on the life and earth sciences and on modern thought in general. Born in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England, on Feb. 12, 1809, Darwin was the fifth child of a wealthy and sophisticated English family. His maternal grandfather was the successful china and pottery entrepreneur Josiah Wedgwood; his paternal grandfather was the well-known 18th-century physician and savant Erasmus Darwin. After graduating from the elite school at Shrewsbury in 1825, young Darwin went to the University of Edinburgh to study medicine. In 1827 he dropped out... Continue reading Charles Darwin's Biography

Robert Fitzroy 1805 - 1865 Robert FitzRoy was born at Ampton Hall, Suffolk, England, on 5 July 1805. Through both parents he was connected with the upper echelons of the aristocracy. From the age of four, FitzRoy lived at Wakefield Lodge, the Palladian-style mansion of the Grafton family in Northamptonshire. In February 1818, when he was almost 13, he entered the Royal Naval College, Portsmouth. He entered the Royal Navy in 1819, moved through the ranks of college volunteer and midshipman and was promoted lieutenant on 7 September 1824. At the naval college he had completed a 20 month course, which included mathematics, Classics, history, geography, English, French, drawing, navigation, fencing and dancing, with great distinction. On leaving the naval college, he had been awarded first medal, and in 1824 passed his examination for promotion to lieutenant with 'full numbers', a result that had not been achieved before. Biography
English naturalist and author of "Origin of the Species" 1859, causing a storm of debate. His theories of evolution through natural selection instigated a revolution in biological science. The furor increased in 1871 with "The Descent of Man." The son of a famed doctor, he was raised in a free-thinking family and studied medicine at Edinburgh. He soon abandoned medicine to become a fanatical naturalist. Darwin married in 1839; of ten kids, five sons survived. Frail in health, he spent a lifetime with a chronic intestinal disorder that caused bouts of vomiting. He died 4/19/1882, London. Link to Wikipedia biography

    Charles Darwin
Darwin, Charles Robert (1809-1882), English naturalist, author of the Origin of Species , was born at Shrewsbury on the 12th of February 1809. He was the younger of the two sons and the fourth child of Dr. Robert Waring Darwin, son of Dr. Erasmus Darwin. His mother, a daughter of Josiah Wedgwood (1730-1795), died when Charles Darwin was eight years old. Charles Darwin’s elder brother, Erasmus Alvey (1804—1881), was interested in literature and art rather than science: on the subject of the wide difference between the brothers Charles wrote that he was “inclined to agree with Francis Galton in believing that education and environment produce only a small effect on the mind of anyone, and that most of our qualities are innate” ( Life and Letters , London, 1887). Darwin considered that his own success was chiefly due to “the love of science, unbounded patience in long reflecting over any subject, industry in observing and collecting facts, and a fair share of invention as well as of common sense “. He also says: “I have steadily endeavored to keep my mind free so as to give up any hypothesis, however much beloved (and I cannot resist forming one on every subject), as soon as facts are shown to be opposed to it“. The essential causes of his success are to be found in this latter sentence, the creative genius ever inspired by existing knowledge to build, hypotheses by whose aid further knowledge could be won, the calm unbiased mind, the transparent honesty and love of truth which enabled him to abandon or to modify his own creations when they ceased to be supported by observation.

    37. The Mis-portrayal Of Darwin As A Racist
Article written in 2006 by R.G.Price.
    http://rationalrevolution.net/articles/darwin_nazism.htm
The Mis-portrayal of Darwin as a Racist By - June 24, 2006 There is a growing effort among opponents of evolution to portray Charles Darwin as a racist, and evolutionary theory as morally reprehensible, even to claim that Darwinism "provided Hitler and the Nazis with a scientific justification for the policies they pursued once they came to power." These accusations are not merely from fringe radicals, but have indeed been made by elected officials and published in books by university professors, as we shall see. Most disturbing, however, is the lack of significant rebuttal to these charges. Many people in fact, including some evolutionary biologists, find it easy to believe that perhaps Darwin was a racist, and perhaps evolutionary theory did contribute to Nazi ideology. In 2001 African American State Representative Sharon Broome of Louisiana sponsored a resolution to condemn "Darwinist ideology" as racist and liken it to Nazism. WHEREAS, empirical science has documented an indisputable commonality among all people groups, or races, and has demonstrated that normal variations in the human gene pool account for our differences, of which racial differences are a trivial portion; and

    Evolution Began in Shrewsbury!
Charles Darwin is Shrewsbury’s most famous son and recently voted as one of the greatest Britons. Born in Shrewsbury Shropshire on the 12th February 1809 at Mount House, he was the son of Robert, a well respected doctor, and Susannah a member of the Wedgwood family. His formative years were well spent and his love and curiosity of the natural world was positively encouraged and flourished. Darwin lived in Shrewsbury until he was 27. Darwin attended school at 13 Claremont and was then privileged to go to Shrewsbury School. Although, as his headmaster Dr Butler revealed, he had little hope of filling his head with Latin or Greek. Indeed as early as nine the young Darwin had started observing and recording things he found in the natural world that surrounded him. Darwin’s grandfathers were equally remarkable men – Erasmus Darwin and Josiah Wedgwood. Both were members of the famous Lunar Society. Darwin would still recognise Shrewsbury today – as many of the medieval buildings, shuts and passages he knew still exist and his old school (now the library) even has a statue to the great man outside its entrance. The fields and river that surrounds the town are still open areas filled with flora and fauna to inspire the future generations.
