Charles Darwin's father at first refused to allow his 22-year-old son to go on this voyage around the world in 1831-1836: he felt it was not a wise career choice. Fortunately, his father relented, and we have Darwin's journal, which may be the greatest scientific travel narrative ever written. Revised by the author in 1860, this is an account of his experiences on the Beagle, which led to his formulation of the theory of evolution. He was able to observe coral reefs, fossil-filled rocks, earthquakes, and more, first-hand, and made his own deductions. Original (of course) and entertaining! Fan of this book? Charles Robert Darwin (1809-1882) , English Naturalist and author who established the theory of evolution, published his findings in On the Origin of Species By Means of Natural Selection; or, the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed by the Creator into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone circling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being evolved.Ch. 15 The culmination of years of research and data collection, Darwin's monumental work represents many fields of science including biology, geology, anatomy, geography, and paleontology. Of course Darwin's work was controversialmany of his fellow scientists, also members of the Church of England and creationists rejected his theories outright. There were numerous debates, the most famous one between Darwin's supporters from the British Association for the Advancement of Science and the Bishop of Oxford. While there have been new developments in the fields of science since

This book contains a wealth of facts, compiled during Darwin's life on matters which were highly controversial at the time. His prior book, Origin of Species, provided the scientific framework for thinking that mankind might, in some way, be a descent from the animal kingdom. For personal reasons, there was some doubt, at the time, whether it would ever be diplomatic to admit such a thing to the human beings themselves, right in their very faces. The title which Darwin placed on this book showed how easy it would be to imagine that the fundamental distinction was closely linked to the question of whom an individual might choose to have sex with, given the great parallels to a wide range of behavior in the animal kingdom. Charles Robert Darwin (February 12, 1809 – April 19, 1882) was a British naturalist who achieved fame as originator of the theory of evolution through natural selection Considered the "father of evolutionary theory," Darwin made two contributions of enormous impact to the idea of evolution. First, Darwin marshaled substantial evidence for the theory of descent with modification , a kinematic theory that treats non-causal relations between things—it deals with the pattern of evolution. Secondly, Darwin proposed a mechanism for that observed pattern, the theory of natural selection . This is a dynamic theory that involves mechanisms and causal relationships—it deals with the process of evolution. Darwin's interest in natural history developed at the college level, while studying first medicine, then theology. But it was his five-year voyage on the HMS Beagle that began his road to eminence. Shane Hamilton, Web Editor Darwin, Charles English scientist (1809-1892) He was born in Shrewsbury to a moderately wealthy family with a strong intellectual heritage. His grandfather, Erasmus Darwin, was a physician, poet and biologist who laid some of the groundwork for the grandson's revolutionary ideas. Charles attended Christ's College at Cambridge with initial thoughts of entering the clergy, but soon took up studies in biology, zoology and geology. From 1831 to 1836, he served as naturalist aboard the HMS Beagle on its scientific mission to South America and the Pacific. Back in England, he published a series of scientific treatises which established his reputation as one of the prominent thinkers of his day. From 1842 onwards, he lived on a country estate in Kent and pursued his studies among its gardens and livestock.
Charles Darwin By 1844, he had written the initial draft of his groundbreaking treatise on evolution and natural selection. However, he left this work unpublished for several years, preferring to refine and elaborate its core ideas. In 1858, he read a forthcoming paper by fellow scientist Alfred Russell Wallace whose thesis closely paralleled Darwin's own unpublished ideas, an event which pushed Darwin to go public with his own research. Both Wallace's and Darwin's papers were presented to the Linnean Society in a famous July, 1858 meeting. Darwin published The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection

Darwin, Charles
Charles Darwin was the founder of modern evolutionary thought, and the developer, along with Alfred Russel Wallace, of the theory that natural selection is a principle driving force in evolution. Darwin is generally recognized as the single greatest thinker in the history of biology, whose contributions provided the basis for understanding the immense diversity that characterizes the natural world. Charles Darwin. Darwin was born February 12, 1809, into a wealthy English family. A lifelong interest in natural history led him to embark, at age twenty-two, on a five-year voyage to South America aboard the HMS Beagle Upon returning home, Darwin pondered these ideas in conjunction with two other streams of thought. The first was the theory of uniformatarianism of geologist Charles Lyell. Uniformatarianism held that major geologic features, such as mountains and canyons, were formed not by rapid and short-lived catastrophic events such as floods, but rather by the slow, steady action of forces such as erosion. This mechanism suggested that Earth was much older than previously believed, a fact which Darwin saw provided the requisite time for the steady accumulation of change that would turn one species into another. The second idea was from An Essay on the Principle of Population
