Darwin, Erasmus
Erasmus Darwin Erasmus Darwin, the grandfather of Charles Darwin, was one of those who put forward the first fundamental proposals for what we now refer to as the theory of evolution. According to him, living things were not created as individually distinct species. On the contrary, they were all descended from a common ancestor and were shaped, altered and varied according to their subsequent needs. The Origin of Species. Charles Darwin had received a lengthy religious education. But a year before setting out on his voyage on the Beagle ,he definitively abandoned certain fundamental Christian beliefs. By that time, he had developed a passionate interest in biology and the paradigm he observed was incompatible with his religious belief. The most important influence in making the young Charles Darwin non-religious, and even actively hostile to it, was his grandfather Erasmus. Erasmus Darwin was actually the first person in Britain to put forward the idea of evolution. A physicist, psychologist and poet, he was someone whose words were listened to with respect. Indeed, according to his biographer, Desmond King-Hele, he was the greatest Briton of the 18th century.

Jump to: navigation search Darwin, Erasmus (1731-1802): English Scientist and Physician. Grandfather of Francis Galton and of Charles Darwin whose evolutionary views he partly anticipated. After his study at Cambridge University, Erasmus Darwin practiced medicine at Lichfield and Derby. Darwin’s main work is Zoonomia or the Laws of Life (2 vols., 1794-96), in which he opposed the view that every new individual is already fully formed in the reproductive cell. Instead he argued that the egg is relatively undifferentiated and that the developing organism draws materials from its surroundings to generate new parts. Darwin later extended this view by claiming that life itself originated from a single ‘primal filament’ and that organisms developed through the ages to meet the conditions of their environment. He also expressed his views on the origin and development of life in two poems: The Botanical Garden (1789) and The Temple of Nature (1803). Although Darwin was very proud of both of them, the two poems were not taken seriously by his contemporaries. His speculative account of evolution, however, foreshadowed the more systematic accounts of Chevalier de Lamarck and Charles Darwin. For instance, the ideas of the transfer of inherited characteristics and of a struggle for existence are already lively depicted in The Temple of Nature. Darwin’s evolutionary account of the origin of man did not cause him to doubt the existence of God as the “Great Architect” of the universe. In

Victorian Web Home Biology Chemistry ... Geology [Tom Hart has generously shared with the readers of the Victorian Web the preceding materials from his ongoing project, Anti-Darwin: The Literary and Philosophical Opposition to Darwinism . He welcomes comments, which can be directed to him at tehart@aol.com.] Erasmus Darwin, the grandfather of Charles , deserves credit for his belief in the possibility of the development of species. In the preface to Back to Methuselah , George Bernard Shaw, describes Erasmus Darwin as one of the originators of evolutionary theory and quotes the following passage from the first volume of Zoonomia OED cites "unrolling" as the first meaning of "evolution." This is the meaning E. Darwin intends here. The process unrolls through the divine decree, "fiat."] For if we may compare infinities, it would seem to require a greater infinity of power to cause the causes of effects, than to cause the effects themselves. This idea is analogous to the improving excellence observable in every part of the creation; such as in the progressive increase of the solid or habitable parts of the earth from water; and in the progressive increase of the wisdom and happiness of its inhabitants; and is consonant to the idea of our present situation being a state of probation, which by our exertion we may improve, and are consequently responsible for our actions. [ Zoonomia , I, 509, quoted in Shaw, II, xxi] The most obvious thing in this passage is the length of the initial sentence, which is actually several sentences joined into one. Within the great length of the first sentence Darwin first proposes that reason is inferior to generation. The reasoning being that generation produces the cause of the effect rather than the effect itself. The byproducts of generation are linked in series. First, the sedimentary rocks (limestone, chalk, marble) are described as coming from the "shells of fish." Another series of minerals is linked to vegetable decomposition. The first paragraph then ends with the exclamatory phrases cited above. "The great architect," is reminiscent of Blake's frontispiece to

Darwin Erasmus
, a physician and poet, was a native of Elton , near Newark Nottinghamshire , where he was born December 12, 1731. After going through the usual school education, under the Rev. Mr. Burrows, at the grammar-school at Chesterfield , with credit, he was sent to St. John ’s college, at Cambridge . There he only continued until he took his bachelor’s degree in medicine, when he went to Edinburgh to complete his studies; which being finished, and having taken the degree of doctor in medicine, a profession to which he was aUvays attached, he went to Lichfield , and there commenced his career of practice. Being sent for, soon after his arrival, to Mr. Inglis, a gentleman of considerable fortune in the neighbourhood, who was ill with fever, and in so dangerous a state that the attending physician had given up the case as hopeless, the doctor had the good fortune to restore him to health. This gave him so high a degree of reputation at Litchfield, and in the neighbouring towns and villages, that his competitor, who was before in considerable practice, finding himself neglected, and nearly deserted, left the place. Dr. Darwin soon after married miss Howard, the daughter of a respectable inhabitant of
