Mrs. Bridgetower has died, and used her will as a final weapon against her son and his wife. Under the terms of it, Solomon and Pearl will not inherit until they have a son; in the meantime, the income of the estate is to be spent educating a Salterton girl in Europe. And so Monica Gall, a secretary and singer for a church choir, is sent to England to learn to be a professional singer. The book follows Monica's education, her personal development, and...
Fifth Business

In this first book of Davies' trilogy, a snowball aimed at Ramsay by his childhood friend Percy Boyd Staunton hits the pregnant Mrs. Dempster. Mrs. Dempster gives birth to Paul prematurely, and Ramsay finds himself feeling guilty over Paul's condition and Mrs. Dempster's subsequent decline. Ramsay develops an obsession with the Dempsters, although he seems unable to help them. Eventually, Paul Dempster runs away. Ramsay also leaves the small Canadian...
Leaven of Malice

A false announcement of the marriage between Solomon Bridgetower and Pearl Vambrace, to take place on November 31, is inserted into the Salterton newspaper, and things get weird for the paper's editor, Pearl, and Solly. Widening spirals of confusion touch many of the characters from Tempest-Tost. This is the second book in the Salterton trilogy, and although it can stand alone, it's better read in order. ...

In the same year the couple returned to Canada where Davies took the position of literary editor of Saturday Night Robertson Davies worked in his early career to increase the quality and profile of Canadian drama. He started the Dominion Drama Festival and was an early member of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival board. In 1948, he produced his first commercially successful play, Fortune, My Foe . The play involves the questions surrounding Canadian culture and arts, from the point of view of a newly arrived immigrant, a young Canadian and an aging Englishman teacher. He wrote several plays during his career, but after a theatrical disaster in New York in 1960 with Love and Libel, or The Ogre of the Provincial World , Davies chose to instead focus on his novels.

      INTRODUCTION
One of the joys of Robertson Davies' fiction is its easy commerce with the full sweep of western culture from the ancient Greeks to the present. Another is its vigorous, talky characters, whose challenges, exhilarations, defeats, and ultimate destination are bodied forth in telling details. And a third is an old-fashioned, attention-grabbing theatricality. The Cunning Man is as broadly learned as its predecessors, as replete with vividly realized characters, and as dramatic in its presentation. The declared subject of the novel (which shares several major figures and events with its immediate predecessor, ) is the cultural life of the city of Toronto in the years before and after World War II or rather, that of the small area around St. Aidan's Church. Here "The Ladies"

INTERVIEW WITH ROBERTSON DAVIES
by
RAYMOND H. THOMPSON
TORONTO
9 JUNE 1992
Every time I passed through Toronto, I seemed fated to miss Robertson Davies whose commitments continue to keep him busy, even in so-called retirement. Finally, I gave up trying to fit him into my travel plans and asked for a time of his choosing. Thus came about our meeting on a fine June morning. I was shown to his office in Massey College of the University of Toronto, where he is a Professor Emeritus as well as one of Canada's foremost novelists, and he talked most genially about his Cornish trilogy.
There are no signs of Arthurian influence in the first novel, but references start to appear in What's Bred in the Bone (Toronto: Macmillan; New York: Viking Penguin, 1985), and the characters of The Lyre of Orpheus (Toronto: Macmillan; New York: Viking Penguin; Harmondsworth: Penguin, 1988) find themselves engaged, not only in mounting a performance of a long-lost Arthurian opera, but also in personally reenacting the Arthurian triangle in their own lives. The situation offers ample opportunity for the irony that Davies so richly relishes, and he was amused to hear that some scholars were even speculating whether the long-lost Arthurian opera (by E. T. A. Hoffmann) actually exists. It does not as far as he knows, but he would be the first to appreciate the irony were it ever to turn up!
