Outside of a Dog: Kate Nepveu's Book Log
Sunday, September 30, 2001 I picked up a used copy of Charles de Lint's The Ivory and the Horn for a friend. This and an earlier collection, Dreams Underfoot , consist of urban fantasy stories set in the fictional city of Newford; I'd read them both several years earlier and then stopped reading Newford stuff, because they'd just gotten too preachy for me. (Admittedly, the stories in Dreams Underfoot had Messages too, but there were enough that were really good in spite of that to make it worth while.) I flipped through it today to see if my memory was correct; alas, it was. However, I was pleased to discover that I continue to like "Coyote Stories" because of its narrative voices. This Coyote he's not too smart sometimes. One day he gets into a fight with a biker, says he going to count coup like his plains brothers, knock that biker all over the street, only the biker's got himself a big hickory-handled hunting knife and he cuts Coyote's head right off. Puts a quick end to that fight, I'll tell you. Coyote he spends the rest of the afternoon running around, trying to find someone to sew his head back on again. "That Coyote," Jimmy Coldwater says, "he's always losing his head over one thing or another."

de LINT, Charles. Dingo. Penguin, Firebird. 213p. c2008. 978-0-14-240816-2. $11,99. JS Seventeen-year-old Miguel Schreiber doesn't know much about girls, but even he's pretty sure there's something odd about Lainey Howe. The day she stumbles into his father's shopall red curls and Australian accenthe thinks there's a connection between them, although her identically red-haired dingo Em seems less than impressed. The next time he sees her, though, he literally is knocked over by the dingo's attentions while Lainey seems distinctly frosty. Then, there are the dreams. Ever since meeting Lainey, Miguel has been transported every night to an Australian forest, where a giant dingo demands "the girl." After discovering that Lainey and her twin sister Em share a rather furry secret, Miguel realizes that he may finally have found a girl worth fighting for, even if she's not 100% human. De Lint is undeniably one of today's best fantasy writers, and in Dingo he brings to life a captivating menagerie of Australian culture and Native American folklore, with just a dash of teenage first love. As with de Lint's other works, the reader is drawn into the fantastical nature of the tale without the fantasy element itself being overwhelming, meaning even those who are not strict fantasy readers are likely to enjoy this well-written novel. Charles de Lint

I'm both grateful to Tolkien and almost wish he'd never been published. Grateful because, without the success of his books we wouldn't have had so many subsequent books, written by those inspired by his work, nor would so many wonderful classic novels have been brought back into print without the existence of a fantasy genre. My irritation has nothing to do with either Tolkien or his work, but rather the fact that because The Lord of the Rings was initially published as a trilogy when it came out in paperback in NA, it begat (in the minds of publishers, writers and readers) the idea that fantasy works best as a trilogy, or as a series, which has resulted in far too many bloated stories that would have been better served in one book. It also resulted in far too many imitations, which in turn spawned their own imitations, so that now the stores are filled with third and fourth generation bad Tolkien. But the man himself, and his writing: pure magic. Charles de Lint

    Description
From the master of contemporary urban fantasy, a new collection of “Newford†stories The city of Newford could be any city in North America, bursting with music, commerce, art, love, hate, and, of course magic. Magic in the sidewalk cracks, myth at the foundations of its great buildings, enchantment in the spaces between its people. In novels like Moonheart Forests of the Heart The Onion Girl , and The Mystery of Grace , and in a series of story collections, urban fantasy master Charles de Lint has explored that magic and those spaces, bringing to life a tapestry of people from all walks of life, each looking for a spark of the miraculous to shape their lives and transform their fate. Here, in the fifth of the story collections, we reencounter old friends such as Jilly, Sophie, and the Crow Girls. We breathe in intimations of the world beyond death, and of magic beyond time. Longtime readers and newcomers alike will find themselves under Charles de Lint’s unique spell.

Paperback - Gollancz (2002) The Onion Girl
Newford: where magic lights dark streets, where myths walk in modern shapes, where humans and older beings must work to keep the whole world turning.
At the centre of the entwined lives of all the Newford tales stands a young artist named Jilly Coppercorn, whose paintings capture tile hidden beings that dwell in Newford’s shadows. With her tangled hair, her paint-splattered jeans, a smile perpetually on her lips, she’s darted in and out of the Newford tales. Now, at last, we have Jilly’s own story. Behind the painter’s fey charm there’s a dark secret, and a past she’s laboured to forget. That past is coming to claim her now, threatening all she loves.
`I’m the onion girl,’ Jilly Coppercorn says. `Pull back the layers of my life, and you won’t find anything at the core. Just a broken child. A hollow girl.’ She’s run from the past and the truth for so long. She’s very, very good at running. But life has just forced Jilly to stop.

Svaha Inside each of us is a tune, a rhyme, a phrase, an image, or something that has haunted us since our childhood, but something whose name we do not know. Perhaps it makes us laugh or cry, cringe in fear or swell with love. Reading The Little Country Morris players and other traditional musicians may be interested in the original fiddle tunes transcribed in the appendix. ^_^
    Newford
The classic book to begin your Newford experience is Dreams Underfoot the best) short story collections I have ever read. What would you do if you woke up one morning and no one knew who you were? No, Trader isn't one of those stories that looks at what the world would be like if you'd never lived in it. Or, not exactly, although it does explore what we live for and how we choose to use what gifts we've been given. Max Trader wakes up one morning to discover he's in someone else's body, and he's not at all pleased. In the process of figuring out just what happened, and how to put things back the way they were, he meets some of the more unusual residents of town (I love Bones, aka Crazy Dog, the Kickaha fortune-teller in the park who may or may not be as crazy as he appears) and finds out just what's important in life. This is one of the books which draws on some of De Lint's repeating characters found in Dreams Underfoot and other stories of Newford, although they're supporting rather than starring roles in this case. While you don't need to have read those first, you might get a kick out of their presence if you've already met them.

The best definition I can come up with for my writing was in a review that described it fantasy for people who don’t normally read fantasy. I've taken to calling my writing "mythic fiction," because it's basically mainstream writing that incorporates elements of myth and folktale, rather than secondary world fantasy. I've written the latter, to be sure, and dabbled in science fiction and dark fantasy, but an overall view of my work will show that such stories are very much the exception, rather than the rule. (For those of you who are interested in reading reviewers' comments about my work, there is a link in the index below.) I’m delighted that the novels and stories are so well-received within the fantasy and science fiction field, but I’m also very pleased that so many other readers enjoy them as well. My fans have been incredibly loyal and supportive to me. If you are one of my readers, I'd like to say thank you for helping me make a living from what I love to do. Since there appears to be an interest in my work on the Net, I've realized that I should make this material available at my own website so that it will be all in one place and factually correct. (One site that was brought to my attention a few years ago listed me as deceased as of 1987, which is obviously not true.) I hope the information I'm providing here answers any questions you may have about me and my work.
