Personen-Lexikon
Samuel Ray Delany (jr.), neben Octavia Butler wohl der bedeutendste schwarze SF-Autor der USA, wurde am 1. April 1942 in New York geboren. Der Sohn puertoricanischer Einwanderer besuchte die Bronx High School of Sciences. In den frühen Sechzigern begann er ein Studium am New York City College, das er jedoch nach einem Jahr abbrach. Seinen ersten Roman, The Jewels of Aptor (dt. Die Juwelen von Aptor ), schrieb er mit neunzehn, veröffentlicht wurde er 1962. Seine Trilogie The Fall of the Towers (dt.

The contents 1984 are easy enough to describe: 56 letters and documents written in the mid-80s by novelist and critic Samuel R. Delany. Addressed to various friends, relatives, and colleagues, they present a vivid and exuberant mid-career portrait of a writer and thinker whose work has had an enormous influence across a startling range of literary and paraliterary genres: science fiction, autobiography, pornography, historical fiction, comic books, literary criticism, queer theory, and more. All the trademark Delany touches can be found here: rich descriptions of urban life, incisive social ob...
Adrift in a Vanishing City
Vincent Czyz, Samuel R. Delany / Paperback / Published October 1998
Price: $8.00 Savings of: $2.00 (20%) Ships in 24 hours
Neither a collection of short stories in the traditional sense, nor a novel, these tales overlap at times, in places intersect, often diverge, but are all held together by the thread of memory. An odyssey of hypnotic beauty originating in a small-time city in Kansas, Adrift in a Vanishing City takes the reader through a tortured landscape of obsessive love, to real-time cities such as Budapest, Berlin and Mexico City, down dead-end streets marked by the invisible graffiti of the lives lost in them. Told in hauntingly lyrical prose, Adrift is a passage within the continuum of memoryfrom which...

Samuel R. Delany Information
Introduction
Samuel Delany is one of my heroes. I read Nova when I was a teenager. At that time, Bantam had published Triton Dhalgren , and Nova with the same style of cover, linking them in my mind. I was twelve or thirteen years old and intimidated by long books, so I read Nova first. I liked it and thought I might like the other two. I told my best friend about it. He told me that Triton was not very good, `a commie book', based on information his older brother had given him after he read it. Because of that, it was six years before I read Triton and Dhalgren When I finally read Dhalgren , all I could think of was how different (and better) my life would have been had I read it when I was younger. I have since tried to get my hands on everything Delany has written, and been pretty successful. Combing used bookstores has gotten me copies of all of his out of print stuff. He is one of the very few authors that I will buy hardcovers of, instead of waiting for the mass-market paperback to be released. I've put together a bibliography based on this.

DELANY'S many books offer not only the beauty of well-turned phrases and the spark of provocative ideas, but an illumination won from the exacting exploration of self and society. In science fiction, literary criticism, comic books, memoir, or pornography, to read Delany is to discover. Showing us what we as readers didn't already know, he freshens our eyes for what we had always accepted as familiar. Delany's writing career began in the precincts of science fiction in the early '60searning him the highest awards in the genre before he was 30and has continued through further SF landmarks (e.g., Dhalgren and Stars in My Pocket Like Grains of Sand Hogg and The Mad Man ), works of memoir and family history (

DELANY, Samuel R. The Jewels of Aptor NY, Ace Books, (1962). Ace Double #F-173. The first book by this award-winning science fiction author whose novels in the 1960s elevated the level of philosophical reflection and discourse in the genre. Inscribed by the author in 1979. Delany's early writing career was influenced by the counterculture of the 1960s, and his novels served as platforms for exploring, and expounding upon, the issues raised by the use of hallucinogenic drugs and the unfettering of sexuality that took place in the Sixties. Delany has since earned a reputation as one of the most informed and credible science fiction critics, and his autobiography won a Nebula Award. Offsetting inside covers; pages acidifying; several hairline creases to covers; very good in wrappers. All books are first printings of first editions or first American editions unless otherwise noted. See more items by DELANY, Samuel R.

Delany, Samuel R. (b. 1942) page: Writer of science fiction, memoirs, erotica, cultural studies, and postmodern criticism, and winner of multiple Nebula, Hugo, and Lambda Literary Awards, Samuel Delany infuses his chosen genres with ideas drawn from linguistics, myth, and anthropology. A prolific writer with a restless intelligence, Delany is widely regarded as one of the finest science fiction writers of his generation Born on April 1, 1942, Delany was reared in a black middle-class family in New York City. His father ran a funeral parlor; his mother worked in a public library. Surrounded with abundant models for intellectual encouragement, he was educated through what he describes as a daily "ballistic" journey from Harlem to schools for the gifted elsewhere in New York.
