You meet the nicest folks in porn theaters
Gay writer Samuel Delany mourns the late, great and sweetly raunchy Times Square.
By Craig Seligman T he New York offices of Salon, where I work, overlook what boosters like to call the New Times Square. As I keyboard, I can hear the clatter of the cranes in the huge hole at the corner of 42nd Street and Seventh Avenue, out of which the Reuters Building is starting to rise; I hear the roar of the heavy trucks across the traffic island, at 42nd and Broadway, unloading office equipment at the new Condi Nast tower. In the afternoon, when the sun is so bright I have to lower my shades to see my screen, I grouse at the squeals of the teenage girls clustered beneath the plate-glass windows of the MTV studios, waving excitedly at musicians waving back from behind. As it happens, I've worked in this neighborhood for much of my adult life. Twenty years ago it was scuzzy and disgusting and no place to hang out at the end of the work day (though sometimes I would quietly return several hours later). But I've never despised it as I do now. For all the talk of a renewal, the streets are a nightmare. Forget about beauty until the sun sets, anyway, and the hallucinatory signage overwhelms the buildings. The new skyscrapers are faceless at best, like the one I work in, and at worst they're like the Condi Nast building, so dispiritingly ugly that they might have been thought up by a New York hater as an act of revenge.

A beautiful, tender novel Which is not to say that the book undermines the significance of race and gender issuesit just brings to them, with a relentless, patient grace, a poet's perspective. I found this passage beautiful:

Delany, Samuel R. (b. 1942) page: Delany's pornography (he cheerfully embraces the label) includes Hogg (1993), the narrative of an eleven-year-old boy drawn to a sexually violent man; The Mad Man (1995, revised 2002), a quest novel infamous for its scatology; and Tides of Lust (1973), a homoerotic metafiction that prefigures the sexual scenes in Delany's science fiction masterpiece, Dhalgren Considered Delany's magnum opus, Dhalgren depicts a violent urban dystopia modeled on the abandoned, burned-out blocks that blighted American ghettos in the 1970s. Kidd, the protagonist, is both poet and outlaw, whose charisma wins him a street gang's loyalty and numerous "ambisexual" escapades. Kidd is also amnesiac; unable to learn from his past, he must continually reinvent his response to society. Meanwhile, Kidd as poet observes his own creative process as the novel unfolds. These devices reinforce a sense of disorientation and precarious identity, drawn from Delany's own experiences with dyslexia. Sponsor Message.

Library Binding The Sandman: A Game of You Neil Gaiman September 1993 Paperback Book Review You may have heard somewhere that Neil Gaiman's Sandman series consisted of cool, hip, edgy, smart comic books. And you may have thought, "What the hell does that mean?" Enter A Game of You to confound the issue even more, while at the same time standing as a fine example of such a description. This is not an easy book. The characters are dense and unique, while their observations are, as always with Gaiman, refreshingly familiar. Then there's the plot, which grinds along like a coffee mill, in the process breaking down the two worlds of this series, that of the dream and that of the dreamer. Gaiman pushes these worlds to their very extremesone is a fantasy world with talking animals, a missing princess, and a mysterious villain called the Cuckoo; the other is an urban microcosm inhabited by a drag queen, a punk lesbian...
