New Exhibition - Beyond the Dustheaps from 24 September "an unfathomable farce - a farce that goes down to the roots of the universe." So wrote Dickens scholar G K Chesterton about Dickens penultimate novel, Our Mutual Friend. A tale of social facades, dark secrets and manipulative schemes. The secrets hidden within the dustheaps of Victorian Kings Cross are central to the storyline. In it a host of characters, gold diggers and questers of moral truths in turns debase and redeem themselves in a cycle of altruistic and anti-social acts. In an investigative manner, 14 artists have devised artworks in response to Dickens former home in Doughty Street and his literature. Based in two parallel but contrasting spaces, the exhibition functions as a series of artworks intervening with the existing museum displays and installed within the newly vacated office spaces next door. A dual exhibition moving between psychological space and that of the language of (re)construction. The facades of society are central to Our Mutual Friend and within the not so empty shell of number 49 Doughty Street the materials tell a story of contemporary urbanism where perhaps the holes, peeling walls and used carpets contain much more than just a veneer.

John Dickens worked as a clerk at the Navy pay office in Portsmouth . He later found work in Chatham and Charles, the second of seven children, went to the local school. John Dickens found it difficult to provide for his growing family on his meager income. In 1822 the family moved to Camden Town in London . John Dickens' debts had become so severe that all the household goods were sold. Still unable to satisfy his creditors, John Dickens was arrested and sent to Marshalsea Prison. Charles, now aged twelve, found work at Warren's Blacking Factory, where he was paid six shillings a week wrapping shoe-black bottles. Six months after being sent to Marshalsea, one of John Dickens's relatives died. He was left enough money in the will to pay off his debts and to leave prison. Some of the inheritance was used to educated Charles at a nearby private school, Wellington House Academy. Charles was only a moderate student and at the age of fifteen he left school and found work as an office boy in a firm of solicitors. I never had to read Dickens in high school or in college; so I decided to try this classic author. This book was extremely FUNNY! Pip and Joe were particularly hilarious throughout the first half of the story... Also, I understood the British writing more easily than I thought I would! (Though for many of the dated words I had to use the Kindle dictionary.) I loved the characters! The only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 is because the story did go on a bit long near the end. But Dickens is a great storyteller! Nicholas Nickleby is next for me...

His father was a clerk in the navy pay office. In 1814 Dickens moved to London, and then to Chatham, where he received some education. He was the second in a family of six children. After his father was imprisoned at the Marshalsea, London, for non-payment of debts, in 1824, Charles took a job in a blacking factory. Next, from 1824 until 1827 Dickens studied at Wellington House Academy, London. From 1827 to 1828 he was a law office clerk, and then worked as a shorthand reporter at Doctor's Commons. In the 1840s Dickens founded Master Humphrey's Cloak and edited the London Daily News. Dickens's relationship with Maria Beadnell, the daughter of a banker, lasted for four years. Afterwards, he married the daughter of his friend George Hogarth, Catherine Hogart in 1836. When Catherine's sisters, Georgiana, moved in with the Dickenses, he fell in love with her. Even though, Dickens had 10 children with Catherine, they were separated in 1858. Additionally, Dickens also had a long-lasting relation with the actress Ellen Ternan, whom he had met by the late 1850s.
