James Dickey was born in Buckhead, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta, on February 2, 1923. His interest in poetry was awakened by his father, a lawyer who used to read his son famous speeches. As a boy Dickey read Byron Conrad Aiken and an anthology of modern poetry by Louis Untermeyer, and developed a taste for the apocalyptic poets, including Dylan Thomas and Kenneth Patchen When he returned from the war, Dickey enrolled in Vanderbilt University in Tennessee, where he studied anthropology, astronomy, philosophy, and foreign languages, as well as English literature. Encouraged to write more poetry, Dickey spent his senior year focusing on his craft, and eventually had a poem published in the Sewanee Review . Determined to write, he pursued graduate work, first at Vanderbilt, then at Rice University in Houston, Texas. The Air Force recalled Dickey to train officers for the Korean War. On his return he took a position with the University of Florida, though he resigned in April 1956, discouraged by the institutional nature of teaching.

Description
Documentation of the development of a major literary figure. This is the definitive James Dickey collection. Wallace Stegner wrote that Dickey's poems leave the reader with "an awed sense of the pure power of these words." Better known as the novelist who wrote Deliverance, Dickey was one of the most important poets of the century. "The Lifeguard" is one of his best poems and is typical of his writing in its blending of the physical and spiritual worlds, in its memorable images, and in its marriage of sound to sense. This is one to read again and again, to be newly astonished.

The New Republic See all Editorial Reviews The Complete Short Stories of Thomas Wolfe Thomas Wolfe May 1989 Paperback From Publishers Weekly Next year will mark the 50th anniversary of Wolfe's death and a suitable occasion for a retrospective. Of the 58 stories in this volume, 35 have never before been collected, and one, "The Spanish Letter," is published for the first time. Wolfe was not a short story writer; most of these fragments were plucked from his massive manuscripts, and many would be more appropriately classified as essay or memoir. "The Spanish Letter," relating the author's visits to Nazi Germany, strongly condemns the "poisoning" of German culture and society by Hitler and his followers. It's a fine piece, but elsewhere Wolfe's well-known faults are conspicuously displayed. Even one of the best known of these stories, "Only the Dead Know Brooklyn," now embarrasses with its inept attempt to reproduce a Brooklyn accent. The puerile...
