Out of Africa: The movie and the life TRIVIA In 1938 Karen Blixen was a newly world famous author after the publication of Out of Africa. Her publisher in England asked her to go to Hitler's Germany and write a high-profile commentary on what was going on there. She was busy with many things but made some inquiries. It was not until 1940 that she agreed to go to Berlin briefly as a foreign correspondent for some Danish newspapers. Via the Baltic Sea the distance between Copenhagen and Berlin is 220 miles, but in late winter Karen Blixen probably had to travel the long way across Denmarkthree times as farincluding two ferry rides with a change of train at Hamburg. Why did she hesitate as much as two years before making the trip? (Answer at the bottom of the page.)

Karen Blixen (1885-1962) Danish writer, who mixed in her work supernatural elements, aestheticism, and erotic undertones with an aristocratic view of life. Blixen always emphasized that she was a storyteller ( fortaellerske ) in the traditional, oral sense of the word. She drew her inspiration from the Bible, the Arabian Nights, the works of Homer, the Icelandic sagas, and the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen, her great countryman. Blixen's stories have inspired such film makers as Orson Welles and Sydney Pollack. She wrote in English and in Danish. 'Are you sure,' she asked, 'that it is God whom you serve?'
The Cardinal looked up, met her eyes and smiled very gently.
'That,' he said, 'that, Madame, is a risk which the artists and the priests of this world have to run!'

(from 'The Cardinal's Fist Tale') Baroness Karen Blixen was born in Rungsted, Denmark, into a well-to-do patrician family. She was the daughter of Ingeborg Westenholz Dinesen, and the writer and army officer Wilhelm Dinesen, whose adventuresome spirit and storytelling talents influenced deeply Blixen's imagination. She spent her childhood on the family estate in Rungsted. Throughout her life Blixen's outlook and manner were unabashedly aristocratic. At early age, Blixen showed an artistic inclination. She attended the Royal Academy of Art in Copenhagen, and also studied in England, Switzerland, Italy, and France. In 1907 Blixen made her debut as a writer with several short stories. In 1914 she married her cousin Baron Bror Blixen-Finecke, and went with him to Kenya, where they run coffee plantation. After they were divorced in 1921, Blixen struggled with mismanagement, drought, and the falling price of coffee by herself but in 1931 she returned to Denmark.

    Biography
Danish writer Karen Blixen who wrote her poetic fiction and autobiography under the name Isak Dinesen and established herself as one of Denmark's leading literary figures. One of five kids, she was born into a strict maternal bourgeois family that idolized the aristocratic class. Her father, Wilhelm Blixen, was an adventurer who spent his youth as a trapper in the U.S. Her father killed himself in 1895 when Karen was ten, leaving the young girl feeling alone among her conventional surroundings. She was an intellectual, fun-loving child who felt stifled by the strict upbringing of her mother. Blixen fell in love with her Swedish second cousin and when he didn't return her love, she became betrothed to his twin brother Baron Bror Blixen-Finecke. Soon after her marriage at the age of 28 in 1913, Blixen moved to what was then British East Africa. With her family's financial backing they purchased a 6,000 acre coffee-farm. Her marriage faltered under her husband's philandering, which left her with syphilis, his incompetence in business and irresponsibility. She fell in love with Denys Finch Hatton, a dashing English army pilot and second son of the Earl of Winchelsea. Despite their love, Hatton refused to commit to their relationship and after eight years of marriage her husband wanted a divorce.
