Tell me, Oh! Dog!, who is the man whose monument thou art guarding?
He is no one but the Dog Himself! But who could have been this man,
the Dog Himself? Diogenes, indeed! And what is his place of origin?
He was a man from Sinope. He who used to live in a tub? Yes, indeed,
he himself! But now, in his death, he lives among the stars!
My name is Diogenes,my nickname is dog.
Ferryman you bring the dead men
to the otherside of Hades,
bring me also, and if I did something in my whole life, it is that I relieved the human life from any useless pride! Even bronze groweth old with time, but thy fame, Diogenes, not all Eternity shall take away. For thou alone didst point out to mortals the lesson of self-sufficiency, and the path for the best and easiest life. Diogenes
Greek philosopher, born about 412 BC, Sinope (modern day Sinop, Turkey); died 323 BC, Corinth, then a city state on the isthmus of Corinth.
Associated eponyms: Diogenes' syndrome A behavioural disorder usually observed in the elderly, characterized by gross self-neglect, lack of self-consciousness about personal habits, untidiness, and compulsive hoarding of rubbish. Biography: The condition is named after the Greek philosopher Diogenes of Sinope who taught cynicism philosophy and a return to a natural way of life, finding his residence in a tub. Diogenes is particularly remembered for his meeting with Alexander the Great (356-323 BC). Alexander was impressed by Diogenes' wisdom and wanted to give him a favour. To this Diogenes replied: "Stand out of my sunshine." To this Alexander is said to have answered: "If I were not Alexander, I would be Diogenes."

Diogenes of Sinope
The most illustrious of the Cynic philosophers, Diogenes of Sinope (c. 404-323 B.C.E.) serves as the template for the Cynic sage in antiquity. An alleged student of Antisthenes , Diogenes maintains his teacher’s asceticism and emphasis on ethics, but brings to these philosophical positions a dynamism and sense of humor unrivaled in the history of philosophy. Though originally from Sinope, the majority of the stories comprising his philosophical biography occur in Athens, and some of the most celebrated of these place Alexander the Great or Plato as his foil.It is disputed whether Diogenes left anything in writing. If he did, the texts he composed have since been lost. In Cynicism, living and writing are two components of ethical practice, but Diogenes is much like Socrates and even Plato in his sentiments regarding the superiority of direct verbal interaction over the written account. Diogenes scolds Hegesias after he asks to be lent one of Diogenes’ writing tablets: “You are a simpleton, Hegesias; you do not choose painted figs, but real ones; and yet you pass over the true training and would apply yourself to written rules” (Diogenes Laertius, Lives of Eminent Philosophers , Book 6, Chapter 48). In reconstructing Diogenes’ ethical model, then, the life he lived is as much his philosophical work as any texts he may have composed.

~ Oscar Wilde on Diogenes Diogenes of Sinope (born 2053 B.C.E. died 1924 B.C.E. ) was an outside dog in ancient Greece who wandered the streets trying to act like a human. He originally used to eat onions found on the roadside of Athens ; however, a bunch of cynical idiots found him and mistook him for the dragon, Plato . Following Diogenes's teachings, the idiots began to spread his word on contempt for animal achievements and a return to humanism.

Lives index THE LIVES AND OPINIONS OF EMINENT PHILOSOPHERS
BY DIOGENES LAERTIUS, TRANSLATED BY C.D. YONGE
LIFE OF ANAXIMENES
I. ANAXIMENES, the son of Eurystratus, a Milesian, was a pupil of Anaximander; but some say that he was also a pupil of Parmenides. He said that the principles of everything were the air, and the Infinite; and that the stars moved not under the earth, but around the earth. He wrote in the pure unmixed Ionian dialect. And he lived, according to the statements of Apollodorus, in the sixty-third Olympiad, and died about the time of the taking of Sardis. II. There were also two other persons of the name of Anaximenes, both citizens of Lampsacus; one an orator and the other a historian, who was the son of the sister of the orator, and who wrote an account of the exploits of Alexander. III. And this philosopher wrote the following letters :
ANAXIMENES TO PYTHAGORAS.
Thales, the son of Euxamias, has died in his old age, by an unfortunate accident. In the evening, as he was accustomed to do, he went forth out of the vestibule of his house with his maid-servant, to observe the stars: and (for he had forgotten the existence of the place) while he was looking up towards the skies, he fell down a precipitous place. So now the astronomer of Miletus has met with this end. But we who were his pupils cherish the recollection of the man, and so do our children and our own pupils: and we will lecture on his principles. At all events, the beginning of all wisdom ought to be attributed to Thales.
