His  Lives of the Philosophers Philosophoi Biol ), in ten books, is still extant and is an important source of information on the development of Greek philosophy. The period when he lived is not exactly known, but it is supposed to have been during the reigns of Septimius Severus and Caracalla. Because of his long and fairly sympathetic account of Epicurus, some think that Diogenes belonged to the Epicurean School, but this is not clear. He expresses his admiration for many philosophers, but his own allegiances, if any, are not stated. He divides all the Greek philosophers into two classes: those of the Ionic and those of the Italic school. He derives the first from Anaximander, the second from Pythagoras. After Socrates, he divides the Ionian philosophers into three branches: (a) Plato and the Academics, down to Clitomachus; (b) the Cynics, down to Chrysippus; (c) Aristotle and Theophrastus. The series of Italic philosophers consists, after Pythagoras, of the following: Telanges, Xenophanes, Parmenides, Zeno of Elea, Leucippus, Democritus, and others down to Epicurus. ANASSIMENE Anassimene nacque probabilmente a Mileto attorno al 528 A.C. e fu allievo di Anassimandro Fu il terzo importante filosofo di scuola ionica e si sa che scrisse alcune opere in dialetto ionico, ma se ne ignora sia il titolo che il contenuto. Alcuni frammenti sono citati in opere di autori successivi e quel che sappiamo di Anassimene qui è stato pescato. La tesi di fondo sostenuta da Anassimene consiste nell'affermazione che principio di tutte le cose è l'aria, la quale è qualcosa di determinato a differenza dell' apeiron predicato da Anassimandro Tuttavia Anassimene sostiene che anche l'aria è infinita e che non avendo fine è anche eterna. Dall'aria derivano attraverso condensazione e rarefazione tutti gli altri elementi, cioè terra, acqua e fuoco. Questi elementi hanno qualità contrarie, cioè caldo e freddo, secco e umido. Inoltre Anassimene afferma che l'aria è divina e che da questo Dio supremo si generano altri dei. Ciò potrebbe mostrare che l'aria non è per Anassimene solo un elemento materiale ma un vero e proprio principio "superiore", tant'è vero che per Anassimene anche la nostra anima è fatta d'aria, o come sostenevano le più antiche filosofie ariane dell'India, del quinto elemento, cioè di etere, ovvero di quel soffio vitale di cui parlano gli antichi Veda e le tarde Upanishad , il pneuma, termine che sarà poi impiegato per indicare lo "spirito".

ANASSAGORA di CLAZOMÈNE VITA Anassagora (Clazomène, circa 500 a.C. - Lampsaco, 428 a.C.), nel 462 a.C. si trasferì ad Atene, dove strinse amicizia con Pericle , pur non avendo spiccati interessi politici. Durante il suo soggiorno ad Atene la sua ricerca suscitò molti interessi e anche avversioni. L'interpretazione naturalistica che diede degli astri (all'epoca ritenuti divini) fu il pretesto nel 432 a.C. per un processo per empietà, che si concluse con la condanna all'esilio. Scrisse un trattato a cui nell'epoca ellenistica venne assegnato il titolo convenzionale Sulla natura PENSIERO I semi della natura L'arrivo di Anassagora ad Atene e il suo trentennale soggiorno segnano uno dei momenti più importanti nello sviluppo della cultura greca. Per la prima volta Atene diventa teatro di una ricerca intellettuale originale, benché opera di uno straniero e influenzata sicuramente dalla lettura dei precedenti sapienti (soprattutto Empedocle ). Significativa è anche l'assenza in Anassagora di precise preoccupazioni politiche: essa comincia a delineare quello spirito di ricerca disinteressata che più tardi doveva avere tanto successo. NICCOLO' COPERNICO VITA e OPERA Niccolò Copernico (Thorn 1473 - Frauenburg, odierna Frombork, 1543), astronomo e cosmologo polacco noto per la teoria astronomica detta "teoria eliocentrica" o " teoria eliostatica", in base alla quale il Sole è immobile al centro dell’universo e la Terra, ruotando quotidianamente sul suo asse, gira nell’arco dell’anno attorno al Sole. Giovinezza e formazione Copernico nacque nell’odierna Polonia da una famiglia di commercianti e funzionari amministrativi originaria della Slesia e di lingua tedesca. Lo zio materno, il vescovo Lukasz Watzenrode, provvide affinché il nipote ricevesse una solida formazione. Iniziò gli studi presso l’università di Cracovia nel 1491, dove studiò arti liberali per quattro anni senza però conseguire la laurea; successivamente, come altri giovani polacchi del suo ceto, si recò in Italia per studiare medicina e giurisprudenza. Nel frattempo lo zio gli aveva fatto assumere un canonicato a Frauenberg, carica di carattere amministrativo che necessitava degli ordini minori. Nel gennaio 1497 cominciò gli studi di diritto canonico presso l’università di Bologna e approfondì lo studio della letteratura classica; in quel periodo fu ospite di un professore di matematica, annoverabile tra i primi critici della veridicità della Geografia dell’astronomo del II secolo d.C. Tolomeo , Domenico Maria Novara; quest’ultimo incoraggiò l’interesse che il giovane polacco nutriva per la geografia e l’astronomia e insieme osservarono l’occultazione della stella Aldebaran, avvenuta il 9 marzo 1497.
