  • ASIN: Book Description Edward Dorn was not only one of America's finest poets but a rare critical intelligence and commentator. He was a student of Charles Olson, who helped him to see the American West as a site for his quest for self-knowledge; at the core of his work is a deep sense of place and the people who occupy it, underpinned by a wry ironic dissent. It was Dorn's comic-epic masterpiece, Gunslinger, which began appearing in 1968 and had already become an underground classic by the time it was published in its entirety in 1974, that established his reputation in the wider world. This new volume brings together poems from Dorn's entire career, including previously uncollected work. Customer Reviews: never west enough A strong line of rather quizzical comedy runs through the volume, and a little poem like "the hazards of a later era" with its pastiche of Williams's icebox poem adds a reflection on the state of agribusiness, etc. (again, the rural). Dorn plays with his sources and influences, among them D. H. Lawrence, whose work can be detected at times from "Los Mineros" of the '60s to the "Languedoc Variorum" of the '90s. Always searching, probing, listening; "way more west", yes, but also never west enough.

Edward Merton Dorn was born in Villa Grove, Illinois . He grew up in rural poverty during the Great Depression. He attended a one-room schoolhouse for his first eight grades. He later studied at the University of Illinois and at Black Mountain College (1950-1955). At Black Mountain he came into contact with Charles Olson , who greatly influenced his literary worldview and his sense of himself as poet. Dorn's final examiner at Black Mountain was Robert Creeley , with whom, along with the poet Robert Duncan , Dorn became included as one of a trio of younger poets later associated with Black Mountain and with Charles Olson. In 1951, Dorn left Black Mountain and traveled to the Pacific Northwest , where he did manual labor and met his first wife, Helene; they returned to the school in late 1954. After graduation and two years of travel, Dorn's family settled in Washington state, the setting for his autobiographical novel By the Sound (originally published as Rites of Passage ), which describes the grinding poverty of life in "the basement stratum of society." In 1961 he accepted his first teaching job at the University of Idaho, where he published the magazine

Back to Bold Boudoir, from a closely packed, long weekend in Hollywood. It is a big lowering of the tone so strong that all one's reserves, stored up over a lifetime, spill out into the general flood of the wettest season the heartland has seen since the last glaciation.

With the death of Edward Dorn the United States loses not only one of its finest poets but a rare critical intelligence and cultural commentator.
Dorn was born in rural Illinois at the start of the Great Depression, in poverty. He was educated in a one room schoolhouse, then High School (where he helped on the local newspaper) and for two years at the University of Illinois. He worked for a while at the Boeing plant in Seattle, returned to Illinois, and through his art teacher Raymond Obermayr was directed towards Black Mountain College in North Carolina where he arrived in the autumn of 1950.
In 1951 he left and travelled to the Pacific Northwest, where he did manual work and met his first wife, Helene. In late 1954 they returned to Black Mountain, where he studied under Charles Olson (Dorn's first published work was the pamphlet What I See in the Maximus Poems ) and graduated in 1955 with Robert Creeley as one of his examiners. After two years of further travel the family settled in Washington state. Their life there, on the edge of poverty, is vividly portrayed in Dorn's first prose book
