Article about collecting Sherlock Holmes memorabilia.
    http://studium.com/2/shmem.html
Not unlike Henry VIII, the Supermarine Spitfire and the Beatles, Sherlock Holmes and the good Dr. Watson have become indelible symbols of British history. Arthur Conan Doyle breathed life into his two fictional but entirely credible characters, and their popularity created an insatiable appetite for more adventures which brought both financial gain and frustration for the author. Even now, some 110 years after Holmes made his first appearance in A Study in Scarlet, the Detective's uncanny wisdom and attention to detail continue to inspire the public at large. After accumulating and reading all 56 Sherlock Holmes stories and novels, the serious collector of Shelockiana may add to their collection other publications, photos, related stories, and, well, almost anything bearing a likeness of "The Sleuth and the Surgeon". The goal of many is the purchase of an original issue or two of the Strand Magazine, where Holmes made his first serialized appearance in July of 1891. From there, it may grow to include first editions of the novels, to original manuscripts and artwork available only at auction. What follows are a few items I found to be interesting additions to a collection of Sherlock Holmes memorabilia. These are examples of issues of the Strand Magazine , which, shortly after its inception, was largely the first to publish all of the Sherlock Holmes adventures, (save for A Study in Scarlet and The Sign of Four ) between July of 1891 and April of 1927. Prices vary depending on the condition of the publication. Some of the most desirable issues are the first

THE POOR FOLK UPON THE MOORS
The Sherlock Holmes Society of the South West of England
(Beryl Stapleton, The Hound of the Baskervilles.) There are few places outside the city of London which can boast as many connections to the stories of Sherlock Holmes as does the south west region of England. No less than three stories are set there including the famous Hound of the Baskervilles the above passage from which we take our name. The passage refers to Baskerville hall upon Dartmoor but the plural use of Moors in our title extends our range to include the lesser known Exmoor and Bodmin Moors which, though smaller, are both similarly desolate and forbidding places and would have been known to Conan Doyle who himself lived and worked in the area. He shared a medical practice in Plymouth, and would have set up his own practice at Tavistock, on Dartmoor, had it not already been over saturated by the profession. The other stories set in the area are Silver Blaze and The Devil's Foot, and our society has made a special study of these particular stories but our membership is world wide and, as such, we show a typical interest in anything Sherlockian. We publish a biannual journal entitled The Torr which is free to members and includes a whole variety of articles dedicated to the exploits of Mr. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John H. Watson and the times in which they lived. We have also published several

Tom Baker I had neither kith nor kin in England, and was therefore as free as air or as free as an income of eleven shillings and sixpence a day will permit a man to be. Under such circumstances, I naturally gravitated to London, that great cesspool into which all the loungers and idlers of the Empire are irresistibly drained. Watson, in "A Study in Scarlet" "Holmes is a little too scientific for my tastes it approaches to cold-bloodedness. I could imagine his giving a friend a little pinch of the latest vegetable alkaloid, not out of malevolence, you understand, but simply out of a spirit of inquiry in order to have an accurate idea of the effects. To do him justice, I think that he would take it himself with the same readiness. He appears to have a passion for definite and exact knowledge." Stamford, in "A Study in Scarlet"

    Doyle, Arthur Conan Biography
Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) British writer, creator Sherlock Holmes, the best-known detective in literature and the embodiment of sharp reasoning. Doyle himself was not a good example of rational personality: he believed in fairies and was interested in occultism. Sherlock Holmes stories have been translated into more than fifty languages, and made into plays, films, radio and television series, a musical comedy, a ballet, cartoons, comic books, and advertisement. By 1920 Doyle was one of the most highly paid writers in the world. 'This is indeed a mystery,' I remarked. 'What do you imagine that it means?'
'I have no data yet. It is a capital mistake to theorise before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts...'

(from 'A Scandal in Bohemia', 1891) Doyle was educated in Jesuit schools. During this period Doyle lost his belief in the Roman Catholic faith but the training of the Jesuits influenced deeply his mental development. Later he used his friends and teachers from Stonyhurst College as models for his characters in the Holmes stories, among them two boys named Moriarty. He studied at Edinburgh University and in 1884 he married Louise Hawkins. Doyle qualified as doctor in 1885. After graduation Doyle practiced medicine as an eye specialist at Southsea near Porsmouth in Hampshire until 1891 when he became a full time writer. Doyle had produced his first story, an illustrated tale of a man and a tiger, at the age of six. Doyle's first story about Holmes, A STUDY IN SCARLET, was published in 1887 in

(Redirected from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Jump to: navigation search Previous (Arthur Cecil Pigou) Next (Arthur Evans) Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Deputy Lieutenant (May 22, 1859 – July 7, 1930), was a Scottish author most noted for his stories about the detective Sherlock Holmes, which are generally considered a major innovation in the field of crime fiction, and the adventures of Professor Challenger. He was a prolific writer whose other works included science fiction stories, historical novels, plays and romances, poetry , and non-fiction, although is primarily known as the creator of Holmes. The enduring legacy of Sherlock Holmes is based on the rise of scientific methods in Western culture . The ability to investigate the smallest details and reason became prized cultural values in the West. Holmes' analytical abilities made him a new kind of hero, one who uses his mind to succeed. Like Victor Hugo , Doyle became increasingly interested in spiritualism and spiritual phenomena as he grew older.
