"A person's a person, no matter how small!" Theodor Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss, would say. "Children want the same things we want. To laugh, to be challenged, to be entertained, and delighted." Brilliant, playful, and always respectful of children, Dr. Seuss charmed his way into the consciousness of four generations of youngsters and parents. In the process, he helped kids learn to read. Dr. Seuss was born Theodor Geisel in Springfield, Massachusetts , in 1904. After attending Dartmouth College and Oxford University, he began a career in advertising. His advertising cartoons, featuring "Quick, Henry, the Flit!," appeared in leading American magazines. His first children's book, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street , hit the market in 1937, and the world of children's literature was changed forever! In 1957, Seuss's The Cat in the Hat became the prototype for one of Random House's best-selling series - Beginner Books. This popular series combines engaging stories with outrageous illustrations and playful sounds to teach basic reading skills. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1984 and three Academy Awards, Seuss was the author and illustrator of 44 childrens books, some of which have been made into audiocassettes, animated television specials, and videos for children of all ages. Even after his death in 1991, Dr. Seuss continues to be the best-selling author of children's books in the world.

NOTE: I have been receiving a lot of mail recently related to Dr. Seuss. This page was originally one of many articles I wrote for Trivia Quotient. I am not a Dr. Seuss expert, so please don't expect me to answer any questions about his life and work.
For a comprehensive list of who's who and what's what in Dr. Seuss, check out the Dartmouth publication at: http://www.dartmouth.edu/~drseuss/whoswho.pdf With millions of books in print, and nearly all of his 50-plus titles still available for sale, Dr. Seuss was, up until his untimely death in 1991, probably the most prolific living writer behind Barbara Cartland. In fact, his GREEN EGGS AND HAM is the third largest selling book in the English language. Born Theodor Geisel in 1904, Dr. Seuss has lent his talent to advertising campaigns of the 1940s, political cartoons for PM, and a 1935 comic strip for Hearst publications called HEJJI, about a young lad's travels through the mythical land of Baako. Commendations awarded to Seuss include an Academy Award for best documentary short subject of 1945 for his writing and production of the propaganda piece YOUR JOB IN GERMANY (aka HITLER LIVES). He also wrote (but did not create) GERALD McBOING-BOING, a 1951 Oscar-winning cartoon. Seuss was awarded an honorary Pulitzer Prize in 1984 citing his half-century contribution to "the education and enjoyment of America's children and their parents."

Sold first cartoon to Judge in 1927 and added Life and Saturday Evening Post to his credits. Use of the popular bug-spray FLIT in some of his cartoons caused the company to hire him for its advertising. Worked on Capra's "Why We Fight" films during WWII. His "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" became a perennial TV hit and a motion picture. "Seuss" is after his grandmother's maiden name; "Dr." was self-awarded since he never finished Oxford. Seuss also contributed to the language of English. The word "Nerd" first appeared in his If I Ran the Zoo. All About Dr. Seuss
"OH, THE PLACES YOU'LL GO!

From: Oh, The Places You'll Go!
Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known to the world as the beloved Dr. Seuss, was born in 1904 on Howard Street in Springfield, Massachusetts. Ted's father, Theodor Robert, and grandfather were brewmasters in the city. His mother, Henrietta Seuss Geisel, often soothed her children to sleep by "chanting" rhymes remembered from her youth. Ted credited his mother with both his ability and desire to create the rhymes for which he became so well known.
Although the Geisels enjoyed great financial success for many years, the onset of World War I and Prohibition presented both financial and social challenges for the German immigrants. Nonetheless, the family persevered and again prospered, providing Ted and his sister, Marnie, with happy childhoods.
The influence of Ted's memories of Springfield can be seen throughout his work. Drawings of Horton the Elephant meandering along streams in the Jungle of Nool, for example, mirror the watercourses in Springfield's Forest Park from the period. What child doesn't grow up having memorized Dr Seuss quotes? His words are so lyrical and rhythmical, it's nearly impossible not to remember them. "I meant what I said, and I said what I meant. An elephant's faithful, one hundred percent." Quickwho said that? Why, it was Horton, of course. Seuss's caring elephant is just one of his many wonderful characters. The people and animals in books by Dr Seuss serve as models of caring, frivolity, and dedication. They teach us important life lessons that stay with us long after we've grown out of childhood. One favorite character continues to be the Grinch, and perhaps one of the best quotes from Dr Seuss comes from How the Grinch Stole Christmas: "And what happened then? Well, in Whoville they say that the Grinch's small heart grew three sizes that day." The triumph of goodness over evil, told in a way only Dr Seuss could tell it. Aren't Dr Seuss quotes great? Sometimes inspirational, sometimes insightful, always fun. If your interest is piqued... oh the places you'll go with our...

    (Theodore Geisel)
    (2/3/1904 - 21/9/1991, USA)
Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, Theodore Geisel, who would become known as Dr. Seuss, studied at the Dartmouth College. After his graduation in 1925, he began his weekly 'Birdsies and Beasties' page in Judge magazine. Using the penname of Dr. Seuss, his name soon appeared on gags and strips inside the magazine and on covers. Later on, he also drew for Life, Vanity Fair and Liberty. He was the creator of the shortlived newspaper strip 'Hejji' in 1935. In the 1940s, he drew political cartoons for the PM newspaper in New York, and embarked on a career in animation.
As the president and publisher of Beginners Books, Dr Seuss changed the nature of children's books in the 1950s and later with the 'Cat in the Hat' series. He published over 40 children's books, full with imaginative characters and frequent use of rhymed prose. Besides 'Cat in the Hat', famous books by Dr. Seuss are 'Green Eggs and Ham' and 'One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish'.
