Du Bois, W.E.B.
Early career
W.E.B. Du Bois. Library of Congress, Washington, D.C. Du Bois graduated from Fisk University, a black institution at Nashville, Tennessee, in 1888. He received a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1895. His doctoral dissertation, , was published in 1896. Although Du Bois took an advanced degree in history, he was broadly trained in the social sciences; and, at a time when sociologists were theorizing about race relations, he was conducting empirical inquiries into the condition of blacks. For more than a decade he devoted himself to sociological investigations of blacks in America, producing 16 research monographs published between 1897 and 1914 at Atlanta (Georgia) University, where he was a professor, as well as The Philadelphia Negro; A Social Study (1899), the first case study of a black community in the United States. Although Du Bois had originally believed that social science could provide the knowledge to solve the race problem, he gradually came to the conclusion that in a climate of virulent racism, expressed in such evils as lynching, peonage, disfranchisement, Jim Crow segregation laws, and race riots, social change could be accomplished only through agitation and protest. In this view, he clashed with the most influential black leader of the period, Booker T. Washington

Du Bois William Edward Burghardt Du Bois pronounced [du'bojz] (February 23, 1868 – August 27, 1963) was an American civil rights activist, sociologist , and educator , widely recognized as the foremost black intellectual and principal black protest spokesperson in the United States during the first half of the twentieth century. As a rigorous academician, he excelled in college ; enjoyed tenure at numerous teaching posts; produced more than 4,000 published works over the course of his life; and became an heroic exemplar to those who would eventually coalesce as the American black intelligentsia. In his role as a scholar activist, he went beyond the confines of the classroom and the halls of academia, in his quest to solve what he called "The problem of the twentieth century—the problem of the color line." Du Bois is viewed by many as the father of modern black scholarship, modern black militancy and self-consciousness, and modern black cultural development. The sole black co-founder of the NAACP , his legacy of social change through efforts to end legalized racial segregation remains outstanding. However, Du Bois was frustrated by the lack of recognition of his social theories, notably "The Talented Tenth," and became disillusioned with American society. In 1963, at the age of 95, he became a

Du Bois, W.E.B.
American, 1868–1963
W.E.B. Du Bois was the preeminent African American writer, scholar, editor, and activist of the first 50 years of the 20th century. He published scores of essays, which range in style from the lyrical to the polemical and in subject matter from the personal to the historical. His influence as an essayist, especially inspiring to African American writers, has been immense. Du Bois showed that the essay could be used to do battle in the struggle for justice and equality as well as to explore the self. In his autobiography, Along This Way (1933), James Weldon Johnson refers to Du Bois’ collection of essays The Souls of Black Folk (1903) as “a work, which, I think, has had greater effect upon and within the Negro race in America than any single book published in this country since Uncle Tom’s Cabin.”
The range of Du Bois’ voice as an essayist originates in his awareness that as an African American he could not write a strictly “personal” essay. He believed that the black writer must always speak publicly and politically as well as personally. The Negro, he wrote in “Of Our Spiritual Strivings” (1903), has “no true self-consciousness,” but only a “double-consciousness,” for he must always “see himself through the revelation of the other world.” For Du Bois this meant that he must address the issue of racism even in his most personal essays.
