Biography
British writer and noted family, the second of three daughters of the famous actor-manager Gerald duMaurier. One of the century's most popular writers, she was first published at 21 with articles and short stories and a first novel in 1931. Her books include "Jamaica Inn," 1936, "Frenchman's Creek," 1941, "My Cousin Rachel," 1951 and "The Scapegoat," 1957, all made into movies. Her most famous work was "Rebecca," published in 1938, which had 39 reprints and was made into a film. She married Tommy Browning, a hero of WW II; three kids, two girls and a boy. She lived in Cornwall with her family all of her life, seldom going out in public and writing always. While married, she had an affair with Gertrude Lawrence, though her bisexuality was never revealed during her lifetime. Widowed in 1965, she continued to live a secluded life on the wild Cornish coast, friendly with her neighbors but shunning publicity. She remarked, "Can't say I really like people." DuMaurier died in her sleep 4/19/1989 at her home.

EXPLANATION: After the death of his wife Rebecca Maxim de Winter is searching for some peace in the south of France. There he meets a shy, young lady, who is staying at the same hotel as he is. She stays there with her boss; a very wealthy, old lady that she has to take care of and hold company with.
A few weeks after their first meeting they decide to get married and the very rich Maxim takes her with him to his estate Manderly in America.
Very soon Maxim’s wife ( her name is never mentioned in the book ) finds out, that she doesn’t have and never will have the qualities of Maxim’s former wife Rebecca, the first Lady de Winter. Every day she gets confronted with Rebecca ( in and out of her new house ) and even in her dreams. Especially Maxim’s housekeeper Misses Danvers shows her disapproval very clearly ( Rebecca used to do this and that ).
At a certain time she thinks that she can never be the wife for Maxim as he used to have and her communication with him becomes less. Until Maxim finds out about her thoughts and then he tells her that this is not true at all, and that he never had such a good marriage with Rebecca, that it was just a marriage of convenience. He tells her that Rebecca had relationships with other men and that at a certain time after she threatened him he killed her. But nobody ever found that out. Another body was found, totally inrecognizable, a few kilometers away from their own private beach where she often sailed with her boat. Everybody thought she drowned with her boat in a heavy storm.
