let's buckle some swash Have you seen our weblog or our monthly book review? We all know Dumas as the author of the Three Musketeers saga and the Count of Monte Cristo ; in addition to these he wrote hundreds of other novels, only a few of which are available in English. We think of them as classics, but to the audience of the day they were the most popular historical novels going. The major problem in finding Dumas' novels in English is finding good unabridged editions. Most English editions of Dumas' work that are currently available are abridged; these should be avoided, in my opinion. The abridgement of The Man in the Iron Mask is usually particularly bad. It is only the final part of a much larger work , and usually gets gutted of the material relating back to the earlier parts. As a result you enter the tale in the middle, with no explanation of why the characters are currently doing what they are doing. I found it most unpleasant on my first try, and in fact never finished reading that version of the tale. However, there is happy news. Dumas' best known books, including all of the books in the

Dumas was born in Paris France , the illegitimate child of Marie-Laure-Catherine Labay (1794-1868), a dressmaker , and novelist Alexandre Dumas . During 1831 his father legally recognized him and ensured that the young Dumas received the best education possible at the Institution Goubaux and the Collège Bourbon . At that time, the law allowed the elder Dumas to take the child away from his mother. Her agony inspired Dumas fils to write about tragic female characters. In almost all of his writings, he emphasized the moral purpose of literature and in his play The Illegitimate Son (1858) he espoused the belief that if a man fathers an illegitimate child then he has an obligation to legitimize the child and marry the woman.

Alexandre Dumas (sr.) (1802-1870) One of the most famous French writers of the 19th century, best known for the historical novels The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo, both written within the space of two years, 1844-45. Dumas was among the first, along with and , who fully used the possibilities of roman feuilleton , the serial novel. Dumas' works are fast-paced adventure tales, which belong to the foundation works of popular culture. "' Diable! ' he said, after having swallowed the divine preserve. 'I do not know it the result will be as agreeable as you describe, but the thing does not appear to me as palatable as you say.'
'Because your palates has not yet been attuned to the sublimity of the substances it flavours. Tell me, the first time you tasted oysters, tea, porter, truffels, and sundry other dainties which you now adore, did you like them? Could you comprehend how the Romans stuffed their pheasants with assaf tida, and the Chinese eat swallows' nests? Eh? no! Well, it is the same with hashish; only eat for a week and nothing in the world will seem to you to equal the delicacy of its flavor, which now appears to you flat and distasteful. Let us now go into the adjoining chamber, which is your apartment, and Ali will bring us coffee and pipes.'"

ALEXANDRE DUMAS [ALEXANDRE DAVY DE LA PAILLETERRIE] (1802-1870), French novelist and dramatist, was born at Villers-Cotterets (Aisne) on the 24th of July 1802. His father, the French general, Thomas Alexandre Dumas (1762-1806) - also known as Alexandre Davy de la Pailleterie - was born in Saint Domingo, the natural son of Antoine Alexandre Davy, marquis de la Pailleterie, by a negress, Marie Cessette Dumas, who died in 1772. In 1780 he accompanied the marquis to France , and there the father made a mesalliance which drove the son into enlisting in a dragoon regiment. Thomas Alexandre Dumas was still a private at the outbreak of the revolution, but he rose rapidly and became general of division in 1793. He was generalin-chief of the army of the western Pyrenees , and was transferred later to commands in the Alps and in La Vendee . Among his many exploits was the defeat of the Austrians at the bridge of Clausen on the 22nd of April 1797, where he commanded Joubert's cavalry . He lost Napoleon's favour by plain speaking in the Egyptian campaign, and presently returned to France to spend the rest of his days in retirement at Villers Cotterets, where he had married in 1792

On a world scale Dumas is perhaps the best known of all French novelists. His massive fictional output brought him an enormous readership in his day, and his key novels have continued to attract a large popular audience, being repeatedly adapted for popular serialization, cinema, and television. His father was a legendary general in Napoleon's army who had distinguished himself by a famous victory over the Piedmontese in the Alps, and whose exploits were recounted by Dumas himself in Mes mémoires (1852-5). His grandfather was a minor aristocrat who had settled in San-Domingo, and his grandmother, Marie-Cessette Dumas, was a black slave-girl. Dumas's literary career started in the early 1820s when, together with literary collaborators, he began to write melodramas and vaudeville sketches, the earliest example of which was produced at the Ambigu-Comique in 1825.
