Alexandre Dumas
Alexandre Dumas is one of the greatest writers of his time. Alexandre Dumas was born on July 24, 1802, in Villers-Cotterêts, France. Few people know that Alexandre was a grandson of a Haitian slave who was also the illegitimate son of Marie Louise-Elizabeth Labouret and Thomas-Alexandre Davy de la Pailleterie, a general in Napoleon's army. His father died when Alexandre was four, in 1806, leaving the family in financial trouble. Although he did not have much money and had limited schooling, Alexandre had a happy childhood. In 1818, Alexandre's mother informed him that they had no money and that he had to find a job. Alexandre accepted a clerking position for the Duke of Orléans in Paris, where he worked as a clerk. After he met a famous French actor, Talma, and decided to become a play writer. Alexandre wrote his first play, Napoléon Bonapart, in 1825. His most popular novels are the musketeers trilogy, which includes The Three Musketeers, Twenty Years After, and The Man in the Iron Mask. Another well-known novels were The Count of Monte Cristo, Ten Years Late, and The Black Tulip. Alexandre fathered two illegitimate children of two different mothers. His son, Alexandre Dumas Junior was born on July 27, 1824 and his daughter, Marie Dumas, was born on March 5, 1831. On February 1, 1840, Alexandre married a woman whom he divorced six years later. By 1843 Alexandre wrote fifteen plays. Historical novels brought him an enormous fortune, but he spent money faster than he earned it. Even though Alexandre earned about 200,000 francs yearly and received an annual sum of 63,000 francs from the newspapers La Presse and the Constitutionel, he was usually in financial trouble

    Which one of the musketeer servants helped the duke of Beaufort to escape from the Vincennes tower ? Alexandre Dumas' "20 Years After"

      Grimaud . Athos, who was a frondist, sent his faithful servant, Grimaud, in to the Vincennes prison as a fake guard. He was supposed to watch closely the imprisoned duke. Beaufort hated him at first, because he didn't talk too much, but when he found out the truth, he was eager to follow the plan made by his friends.
    Who were Raoul's parents ? Alexandre Dumas' "20 Years After"

      Madame de Chevreuse and Athos . Raoul was in reality an accident; after his birth, the mother left him at the inn where nine months earlier Athos had rested on a cold winter night (Madame de Chevreuse was already there; in the end her famous glamour charmed the count). Athos, recognising his son, adopted the baby and raised him, without telling him who his real parents were.

Home Library French Literature Companion ('Dumas fils') Dumas, Alexandre (‘Dumas fils (1824-95). Playwright, often bracketed with Augier as the most influential dramatist of the Second Empire. Natural son of Alexandre Dumas père , the circumstances of his birth and upbringing induced in him a lifelong concern with the problems of adultery, illegitimacy, and prostitution. La Dame aux camélias (1852), his play about the doomed passion of a courtesan and the scion of an honourable family, has achieved legendary status and was turned into an opera, La Traviata , by Verdi. Unlike Augier, who was drawn to broader subjects like the ethics of commerce, the power of the press, and the influence of the Church, Dumas fils concentrates narrowly on sexual morality, arguing a case for or against certain values and attitudes. His dialogue is brilliant and showy, involving carefully orchestrated rhetorical exchanges, and he handles surprise and suspense skilfully. He tends to sensationalize his subject-matter, as one can see from Le Demi-monde (1855), his play about an unscrupulous woman of easy virtue;
