  • ASIN: Customer Reviews: Unreadable Dreck A PASION FRUIT Well... i read the Alexandrea Quartet many years ago and i was completely amazed by the way Durrell could recreate the real and external world of a group of friends who lives in Alexandria while their internal peregrination. In my personal opinion the best characters are Justine and Clea. And not because i am a woman but because they are sharp and also round and full of shades. Eventhough you can read each book separeted it is much better if you read the whole quartet. A Broken Beauty With its non-linear structure, sensuous prose, and cast of characters buffeted and beleaguered by love, this tetralogy is one of the masterworks of the twentieth century, and remains the finest work of literature to emerge from Alexandria.

Lawrence Durrell (1912-1990) Anglo-Irish novelist, playwright, best known for THE ALEXANDRIA QUARTET (1957-60). Many once believed it would secure Durrell the Nobel Prize for Literature. The experimental novel of mystery, love, and espionage explored memory and knowledge, contrasting in its story the love affair of a young writer with the recollections of the other people. Durrell spent most of his life outside England – in India, Corfu, Egypt, Yugoslavia, Rhodes, Cyprus, and the south of France. "Hellenic worlds are replaced here by something different, something subtly androgynous, inverted upon itself. The Orient cannot rejoice in the sweet anarchy of the body - for it has outstripped the body. I remember Nessim once saying - I think he was quoting - that Alexandria was the great winepress of love; those who emerged from it were the sick men, the solitaries, the prophets - I mean all who have been deeply wounded in their sex." (from Justine, part one of the

It has been posthumously suggested that Durrell never had British citizenship though more accurately, he became defined as a non-patrial in 1968 due to the amendment to the Commonwealth Immigrants Act 1962 . Hence, he was denied the right to enter or settle in Britain under new laws and had to apply for a visa for each entry. His most famous work is the tetralogy The Alexandria Quartet

    (b. Feb Durrell wrote several books of poetry and prose before the publication of The Alexandria Quartet, a novel in four parts Justine Bal thazar Mountolive (1958), and Clea (1960). The lush and sensuous tetralogy became a best-seller and won high critical esteem. The first three volumes described, from different viewpoints, a series of events in Alexandria before World War II; the fourth carried the story forward into the war years. By its subjective narrative structure The Alexandria Quartet demonstrates one of its main themes: the relativity of truth. More important is the implied theme: that sexual experience, the practice of art, and love are all ways of learning to understand and finally to pass beyond successive phases of development toward ultimate truth and reality. Durrell's later novels, Tunc (1968) and its sequel, Nunquam (1970), were less well received than his earlier fiction. The Avignon Quintet consisting of Monsieur; or, The Prince of Darkness

    Biography
Irish writer born in India, a novelist, playwright and travel writer. First published in 1938 with "The Black Book," he is perhaps best known for his four-volume "Alexandria Quartet," 1957-1960. He was the first to popularize travel books with his stories about Greece, and his novels centered on Egypt, Greece and France. Durrell was born into a family that had a tenuous relationship to both India and it's homeland. They dealt with the caste system and the lack of a correct university system, which were obstacles to employment in the Indian Civil Service. His Indian-educated father was an engineer employed by the railway and later, a partner in a construction firm. Wanting his son to have the education of an English gentleman he packed the boy off the England, where Durrell failed to pass entry exams. Later he wrote that, "Intellectually, I was brilliant, but failed the exams because of subconscious resentment." Durrell grew up with anxieties about his social class and felt that he secured social distinction by being an artist, in his case, the writer as the center of a creative universe.
