Durrell, Lawrence.
THE BLACK BOOK: An Agon.
Paris: The Obelisk Press 1938. - First edition of this mildly pornographic novel; not published in the U.S. until 1960, or the U.K. until 1973. Covers show some soiling, overhanging edges lightly shelfworn, short splits at spine corners, apparently missing the rear flap, few pages roughly opened resulting in some marginal loss, and stain on tops of pages 12 and 13 affecting some text, though still readable (appears to have lain open on freshly stained wood). Altogether, a well-readand priced accordinglybut passably collectable copy of this scarce, fragile item. [Attributes: First Edition]

Description
Set amid the corrupt glamour and multiplying intrigues of Alexandria in the 1930s and 1940s, the novels of Durrell's "Alexandria Quartet" (of which this is the first) follow the shifting alliances - sexual, cultural and political - of a group of quite varied characters.
Customer Reviews
Love's Possession Justine is the first novel in a four volume set known as "The Alexandria Quartet." Lawrence Durrell sets the stage with a description of the behaviors and thoughts of his characters that are determined by the cultural history and current settings of the ancient city in Egypt. The acts and interactions of the international cast, including Arabs, Jews, Africans, and Anglos, are not the results of free will, but are reactions to Justine who is affected by her life long residence in Alexandria.

Book Review
Perhaps the most famous of Lawrence's novels, the 1928 Lady Chatterley's Lover is no longer distinguished for the once-shockingly explicit treatment of its subject matterthe adulterous affair between a sexually unfulfilled upper-class married woman and the game keeper who works for the estate owned by her wheelchaired husband. Now that we're used to reading about sex, and seeing it in the movies, it's apparent that the novel is memorable for better reasons: namely, that Lawrence was a masterful and lyrical writer, whose story takes us bodily into the world of its characters. This text refers to the Paperback edition.

November 2002 Mass Market Paperback From AudioFile [Editor's Note: The following is a combined review with JUSTINE, MOUNTOLIVE, and CLEA.]The four linked novels that comprise English author Lawrence Durrell's masterpiece, THE ALEXANDRIA QUARTET, are set in Alexandria, Egypt, around the time of WWII. The four novels explore the city's polyglot society, full of intrigue, mystery, and sensuality, telling essentially the same story from different points of view. JUSTINE focuses on the beautiful Jewish wife of a wealthy Copt. Her story is told by Darley, her English lover. In BALTHAZAR, Darley reconsiders and retells the story he told in Justine, using information from a mysterious new character, Balthazar. In MOUNTOLIVE, as war begins to loom, British Ambassador David Mountolive enters the intrigues of the interwoven community of characters. In CLEA, Darley returns to a...

In Alexandria in the years before the Second World War, an exiled Irish school teacher seeks to unravel his sexual obsession with two women: the tubercular cafe dancer, Melissa, and Justine, the alluring Jewish wife of a wealthy Coptic Christian. What emerges in his sessions with the psychiatrist Balthazar, however, is something far more complex - and unfathomably more sinister - than neurosis. Lawrence Durrell's kaleidoscopic narrative ushers us into a world in which no perception is reliable - and love itself is always an act of treachery. (less) Mass Market Paperback, 280 pages
