"Suddenly I turned around and she was standing there...
With silver bracelets on her wrists and flowers in her hair... She walked up to me so gracefully and took my crown of thorns... Come in, she said... I'll give you shelter from the storm..." Shelter from the Storm B.Dylan "Every one of them words rang true... And glowed like burning coal... Pouring off of every page ... Like it was written in my soul ...from me to you... I'm still on the road...headin' for another joint... We always did feel the same... We just saw it from a different point of view..." Tangled Up in Blue B.Dylan "Fishermen hold flowers... Between the windows of the sea... Where lovely mermaids flow... And nobody has to think too much... About Desolation Row..."

Contact Me Bob Dylan Please click the new site link below to get to our new and updated site NEW SITE Born Robert Allen Zimmerman, on May 24, 1941, in Duluth, Minnesota. Driven by the influences of early rock stars like Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Little Richard, the young Dylan formed his own bands, including the Golden Chords and Elston Gunn and His Rock Boppers. While attending the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, he began performing folk and country songs at local cafes, taking the name Bob Dylan after the late Welsh poet Dylan Thomas.
In 1960, Dylan dropped out of college and moved to New York, where his idol, the legendary folk singer Woody Guthrie, was hospitalized with a rare hereditary disease of the nervous system. Dylan visited with Guthrie regularly in his hospital room; he also became a regular in the folk clubs and coffeehouses of Greenwich Village, met a host of other musicians, and began writing songs at an astonishing pace, including "Song to Woody", a tribute to his ailing hero. In the fall of 1961, after one of his performances received a rave review in The New York Times, Dylan signed a recording contract with Columbia Records. Released early in 1962, Bob Dylan contained only two original songs, but showcased Dylans gravelly-voiced singing style in a number of traditional folk songs and covers of blues songs.

96. Bob Dylan: Tangled Up In Jews
Bob Dylan s life and music from a Jewish perspective.

Bob Dylan: Tangled Up In Jews This web page is devoted to studying and collecting trivia relating to the Jewish religious/cultural odyssey of Shabtai Zisel ben Avraham v'Rachel Riva, a.k.a Bob Dylan. If you've been here recently, check out what's new . This page was last modified May 25, 2008. Highlights of Dylan's Judaic journeys include:
  • Changing his name from Zimmerman in the early '60s. Considering moving to a kibbutz in the early '70s. Converting to born-again Christianity in the late '70s. Studying with Lubavitch Hasidim in the early '80s.
Overview
I wrote Bob Dylan: Tangled Up In Jews in 1991 for the Washington Jewish Week. Taking off from the then-just-published Clinton Heylin biography and the Bootleg Series boxed-set, it looks at Dylan's life and times through decidedly Jewish spectacles. Overheard: In the coffee room of Powell's bookstore, three teenage boys with spiky hair and skateboards were reading Interview magazine and discussing the current music scene. The conversation turned to Robert Zimmerman, a.k.a. Bob Dylan. Said one: "I don't get why he changed his name from Zimmerman. All the coolest guys I know are named Zimmerman."
