22. The Island Of The Day Before / Umberto Eco
A review of the book, with notes on sundry Eco-related matters.
http://www.forum2.org/tal/books/island.html
The Island of the Day Before / Umberto Eco Reviewed by Tal Cohen Sunday, 10 August 1997 This is the story of Roberto della Griva, a young Italian noble, and his travels around the world. As a teenager, Roberto took part in a siege, which radically changed his view of life. His father died in that siege, and later, Roberto decided to leave his father's lands and move elsewhere. He settled in Paris, with the elite intellectuals of that era (mid-17th century). The Parisian scene that Eco portrays is a very colorful one, with both fictional and true characters like Cardinal Richelieu, Cardinal Mazarin, and even a certain young man of 17 who was designing a computational machine at that time...
The story begins when Roberto, a sole refuge from shipwreck, finds himself on another ship. But this ship is strangely deserted, as if the crew fled from something horrid, leaving everything behind. Roberto's story is told by a scholar, presumably Eco himself, who investigates Roberto's carefully maintained journal. Slowly, as the story unfolds, we find more and more and Roberto's past, and later on, he slowly starts to find out more and more about himself.
Roberto is indeed in a most awkward situation: In an empty ship, a few hundred yards from shore, he cannot reach land alone. It seems like he is trapped. And to pass his time in his loneliness, he starts making up stories about his mysterious evil brother, Ferrante. It seems like deep inside, Roberto knows that Ferrante is nothing but a creature of his imagination, and yet, his actual life story is filled with gaps that cannot otherwise be explained.

    The World According to Eco

    By Lee Marshall
Italian novelist and semiotician Umberto Eco expounds upon the Net, writing, The Osteria, libraries, the continental divide, Marshall Mcluhan, and, well, God.
so you didn't know what a feat Umberto Eco pulled off in writing The Name of the Rose , that postmodern bestseller (17 million copies and counting) set in a 12th-century monastery. You didn't know that Eco wrote the novel while holding down a day job as a university professor - following student theses, writing academic texts, attending any number of international conferences, and penning a column for Italy's weekly newsmagazine L'Espresso . Or that the portly 65-year-old semiotician is also a literary critic, a satirist, and a political pundit. Eco first rose to fame in Italy as a parodist in the early '60s. Like all the best satirists, he oscillates between exasperation at the depths of human dumbness, and the benign indulgence of a grandfather. Don't let that grandfatherly look fool you, though. Eco was taking apart striptease and TV anchormen back in the late '50s, before anyone had even heard of Roland Barthes, and way before taking modern culture seriously (deconstructing The Simpsons , psychoanalyzing Tintin) became everybody's favorite pomo sport. Then there's his idea that any text is created as much by the reader as by the author, a dogma that invaded the lit crit departments of American universities in the mid-'70s and that underlies thinking about text in cyberspace and who it belongs to. Eco, mind you, got his flag in first, with his 1962 manifesto

32. Umberto Eco And His Travels In Hyperreality
Umberto Eco in his essay, Travels in Hyperreality, saw the emergence of the age of simulation. He recognized that when simulations promise us something better than real, it is often a disguised sales pitch. Commentary on Eco s commentary.

Traveling Through Hyperreality With Umberto Eco
An early description of the way contemporary culture is now full of re-creations and themed environments was provided by Umberto Eco. In a brilliant essay, Eco saw that we create these realistic fabrications in an effort to come up with something that is better than real a description that is true of virtually all fiction and culture, which gives us things that are more exciting, more beautiful, more inspiring, more terrifying, and generally more interesting than what we encounter in everyday life. In his description of Disney, Eco also saw that behind the facades lurks a sales pitch. Put these ideas together and you have a succinct characterization of the age, which is forever offering us something that seems better than real in order to sell us something. That makes Umberto Eco one of the forerunners of contemporary thinking on this subject.
(One) of the early theorists of simulation was the Italian writer and literary critic Umberto Eco, who went on a tour of America to get a firsthand look at the imitations and replicas that were on display in the nation's museums and tourist attractions. The essay that he subsequently wrote describing his trip, bore the odd title "Travels in Hyperreality," which made it sound more like science fiction than the brilliant work of culture criticism it turned out to be. The essay, which is dated 1975, also had an anomalous quality to it. Looking at it, today, it reads like a strange combination of Postmodern philosophy and something out of the Sunday travel section, full of sardonic descriptions and exaggerated denunciations that focus on the cultural shortcomings of America.

34. Umberto Eco's Piece On Mac And DOS, Catholic And Protestant
A brief bit of wit from Eco himself on personal computing operating systems, and the religious divide betwixt the two main churches.
http://www.simongrant.org/web/eco.html
Umberto Eco's piece on Mac and DOS, Catholic and Protestant
The fact is that the world is divided between users of the Macintosh computer and users of MS-DOS compatible computers. I am firmly of the opinion that the Macintosh is Catholic and that DOS is Protestant. Indeed, the Macintosh is counterreformist and has been influenced by the "ratio studiorum" of the Jesuits. It is cheerful, friendly, conciliatory, it tells the faithful how they must proceed step by step to reach - if not the Kingdom of Heaven - the moment in which their document is printed. It is catechistic: the essence of revelation is dealt with via simple formulae and sumptuous icons. Everyone has a right to salvation. DOS is Protestant, or even Calvinistic. It allows free interpretation of scripture, demands difficult personal decisions, imposes a subtle hermeneutics upon the user, and takes for granted the idea that not all can reach salvation. To make the system work you need to interpret the program yourself: a long way from the baroque community of revelers, the user is closed within the loneliness of his own inner torment. You may object that, with the passage to Windows, the DOS universe has come to resemble more closely the counterreformist tolerance of the Macintosh. It's true: Windows represents an Anglican-style schism, big ceremonies in the cathedral, but there is always the possibility of a return to DOS to change things in accordance with bizarre decisions.....
