The life and works of Edasseri Govindan Nair Edasseri’s writings also afford a very different perspective of the various aspects of womanhood; he has been rightly called the bard of the heroic Motherhood. And long before ecology and environmental pollution were heard of in this state of Kerala, Edasseri has internationalised the impending problem and prophesied the inevitable doom. Now, practitioners of Feminist Literary theory and eco aesthetics have re-discovered in him a kindred spirit. Edasseri also ranks as a major playwright and eminent prose writer of Malayalam. Interestingly he is one poet who has inspired many of his successor poets as a subject of poetry.

" Adorable is an idea -
As long as it spreads light, but-
If it darkens and pours misery
Throw it out to make space for the new! " Given below are extracts from a few poems by Edasseri Govindan Nair, translated by Dr. M. Leelavathi. I too had a mother
When a King bought me, a slave,
She was given a price, a few coins
She tied them to my apron-strings
And left bare-handed
I bought a blanket, later
To protect her from cold
Alas! When I came with the gift at last She had gone for eternal rest Under the cover of a thick earthen blanket. [A few lines from the poem "The Shepherd Of King Bimbisaran" translated by Dr. M. Leelavathi.] No debt bothers me now No balance left for Tomorrow's shopping either The thief will sneer at me More so will do the rich I wish both see me the same way Till I dissolve into the elements.

This poem is about a father’s feeling towards his daughter after her arranged marriage according to traditional custom of Kerala. In this poem a father finds a rich son-in-law to secure his daughter’s future, but the son-in-law had took a word from the father that he will never visit them after the marriage. The poem is about the dilemma and pain that father faces after he got her married. On one side he has a vowed to his son-in-law that he will never visit them and on the side his love and affection makes him desperate.

By Malayalam poems, on October 3rd, 2010 Veenapoove (1907) – “A dead flower” by Mahakavi Kumaran Asan Second Stanza Explanation : Veenapoove (1907) – “A fallen flower” – Second Stanza Continuation from First Stanza.. Mavakavi Kumaran Asan then depicts the past of the flower.  He becomes nostalgic and remembers how the flower was pampered as a flower bud and how the plant would have nurtured it to blossom. He reminds us that every living being has a stage where they are pampered and attention is given but all have the same fate as the flower. The plant that gave birth to you would have pampered when you were infant.
